The NFL thing is so deeply frustrating, in part because it's so stupid and at the same time such a direct line to what Trump stands for and embodies. The reasons that people get so angry about it are so stupid, and they're so entitled to their stupidity - they're furious at the idea that anyone should care about this. I mean, the fact that Trump didn't just talk about the flag, he was bullshitting about the referreeing in the NFL too - it's literally just things that make middle-aged divorced dads really angry - I mean how do you group those things together when they're so obviously different in importance and content? And the reason is because what people are angry at isn't just that the protests are "disrespectful", it's also that an issue as unimportant in their eyes as the systemic and deadly injustice of the American system of law & order, and the literal deaths at its hands, is intruding on their Sunday entertainment. It's sickening. And it's not just Trump, it's running through American sports and American culture generally - and in fact, it's really made it transparent to me how deeply embedded a particular and deeply racist mode of understanding American sports is for certain parts of the culture. and maybe I'm pessimistic but it seems to me it's likely to be a successful move for him. It's very depressing.
