Yeaaah, most fanfic is written by younger peeps and they usually use fanon characterization. I have a rule that whenever I search fic to usually look for the oldest ones. That way you don't deal with much fanon or at least find something completely different from it.

That said Haikyuu is genuinely enjoyable. I'm a volleyball freak (love the sport, used to practice in high school, have joined clubs, etc) so I absolutely love the volleyball aspect of it. The characters are also great; there isn't a single one I can think of disliking. Personally I ended up relating to a lot of the characters, too. Ship wise I'm in the same boat.

I really think it's amazing how every single character is just so very likeable or at the very least never entirely unlikable in this series. It's absolutely charming.

Yeah, I mean. I thought I was going to hate Oikawa, Ushikawa or even the rival teams but nope! Everyone or at les most of them are still developed and you an see where they come from, even if you don't exactly end up liking them. It's one of the highlights of the manga, imo.

It's this thing where you keep expecting to not like people from the rival teams because, hey, shounen sports manga, it's just what happens. But then all those characters get those little background stories (... a bit too much in some cases where it's a team you'll never encounter again but hey, thats part of the charm as well) and you can't really dislike them anymore after knowing their motivations. It's really well done, especially when compared to other titles in the genre.
What fandom does to those characters is a different thing altogether though. In a lot of cases, it feels like they read/watched an entirely different series.

Yes. I feel like, compared to other manga at least, Haikyuu is good at subverting the whole "we're rivals so we're over the top EViL!!!111" that predates shounen manga in general. Kuroko is a good example where some of the rivals where so over the top evil they might as well be leaving damsels in distress in the middle of a train road while twirling their mustache and laughing maniacally (I still love the series, though). Also it takes a realistic approach to volleyball and games in general, me thinks. Karasuno vs. Aobajosai match in the second season had me at the edge of my seat and the anime animated it beautifully, too! Even when I knew Karasuno was going to win I still held my breath during the final moments of the match.

Uh... that was a lot of ramble but it's one of the many reasons why I love the manga.

That said, yeah. I don't interact with the fandom much because they tend to fall under the same tropes over and over. It's like reading a random yaoi manga found on myreadingmanga with the characters faces but with completely flanderized personalities. There are jewels here and there, though.
