Smoking is the unbelievable part?

I don't think it's the smoking, it's the amount of smoking. And for guys that have trouble getting food on a regular, where the fuck are they finding all these cigarettes anyway?

They are animated characters in a not highly realistic setting. If you're going to have characters who smoke excessively, this is the way to get that done easily.

They probably have those magical cartoon cigarettes that just hang there, never falling out of their mouths, despite being able to speak without mumbling.

They didn't really have that much trouble getting food; I'm pretty sure it just seemed that way because Goku was always complaining about how hungry he was. Sanzo had some kind of divine gold card provided by Kanzeon Bosatsu, so whenever they found a town, they'd hit the best restaurant and gorge themselves.

And if there were no towns nearby, apparently they did some hunting (Sanzo) and gathering (Hakkai).
