Something about "at this time and age" makes this secret kind of unbelievable.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-09-26 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
why? It's a new ongoing anime.

DA

The manga began in 1997...

I'm a huge fan and own most of the manga and the anime though I didn't watch it in forever. And they didn't smoke as much. In Blast it's literally 60% of the time if not more. They FIGHT with a sig. In the manga they were out of smoke most of the time.

So your complaint is that the creators doubled down on the smoking in the latest series, when you would have expected them to scale back to, uh, reflect the mores of the time?

Re: OP

yep! That's right. Sorry for not being clear, my communications skills are not up to par lately.

Re: OP

Okay. Well, I think that this can easily be explained partly by the enduring popularity of smoking in Japan and indeed much of Asia (so... different mores), and partly by the fact that as a media property ages, character traits have the tendency to get exaggerated. Their smoking habits may have been somewhat Flanderized in the latest anime.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2017-09-27 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very good point about character traits being exaggerated.

Re: OP

So which is it? Their smoking doesn't make sense for a modern series, or their smoking is excessive compared to the older series?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2017-09-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say both. But this's only an opinion.

Re: OP

Yeah but Gojyo and Sanzo have been insane chain smokers since the series started, which is nearly 20 years ago if I'm remembering correctly.

To suddenly have them quit would make no sense, especially since a lot of Japanese men still smoke. A lot.

... Did you start watching this show and did not notice it's a fourth season? Like, seriously?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2017-09-26 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)

Which follows the first three seasons/series.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2017-09-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It can't be because I actually own the previous anime series and they're completely different style, budget and were made ages ago.
I know what you mean about the continuation but it's a huge stretch to call it a 4 season.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2017-09-27 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it actually is a direct continuation and a(n almost) direct adaptation of the manga. The style is different but technially it is the fourth season.
