I feel like aggressively diverse/progressive headcanons are frequently just a way for fans to pretend to ethically enjoy "problematic" media.

Is Harry Potter problematic?

Quite a few people have had and still are having the vapors that such a big, popular series had mostly white major characters. Which is probably why so many people have latched onto "Hermione IS black" and "James IS Indian" (a few have latched onto "the Black family IS multiracial, generally some form of Asian" for some reason.)

When did James is Indian happen? Harry doesn't look multiracial.

Tumblr has been all about Indian James (and consequently Indian Harry) for ages, where have you been?

NAYRT

Not on Tumblr. I found a fanfic with Indian Harry about a year ago and I was confused as FUCK for a while. I had no idea until now this was a thing and not just that author going, "okay, the Potters are Indian because that would be fun to me".

Gotta agree with you there.
