As a child, what is something silly or weird you believed?

1. All butterflies were girls and all moths were boys.

2. All dogs were boys and all cats were girls.

3. If I kept sniffling without blowing my nose all the snot would go to my brain and eventually gum it up so bad I wouldn't be smart anymore (thank you, Dad :P lol)

I also believed that all cats were girls and all dogs were boys. And that's even despite the fact that I used to watch cartoons with male cats.

I suspect it's because in my young mind it fit in with my idea of a typical family: a male dad and a female mom, a male brother and a female sister, a male uncle and a female aunt, a male grandpa and a female grandma, and finally: a male pet and a female pet. And everybody knows that all pets are dogs and cats, just like all houses are rectangle-shaped with a spiky rooftop, even thoguh you've been living in an apartment block for all of your short life.

Cultural osmosis can be weird.

I used to believe potatoes would give you worms. Granted an adult told me that.

I thought that when two people fell in love and got married, their families always automatically hated each other, like out of Romeo and Juliet. I had no explanation for why they would hate each other, but I guess I had absorbed the idea that true love in spite of obstacles is what happens in stories and therefore must be what happens in real life. My grandparents used to all live near each other, but they retired and both sets moved apart when I was very little, so growing up I never saw both sides of my family together at once. Thus, I had no evidence to the contrary that my parents had experienced an epic love story wherein their parents each hated their child's in-law's guts. Then one day one of my grandmothers mentioned she had been friends with my other grandparents. She couldn't figure out why I was so shocked to hear that.

This isn't as silly, but I long thought that WWI had been referred to as "The War to End All Wars" in the sense that it was just a really, really big war - the biggest to-date. Like how you might say "Look at this burrito. It's huge! This is the burrito to end all burritos!" I had no idea there was another, far more hubristic meaning of "If the right side wins, there will be no more wars."

My grandparents used to live in Long Beach, California and for a while I thought Long Beach was just some giant retirement community and I was confused when I saw some kids playing there. I thought they must also be visiting their grandparents.

Funnily enough, my dad grew up in Long Beach! My grandparents had moved away by the time I can remember ever visiting them, so I have no memories of Long Beach, if I ever even went there.

there are a lot of really old TV shows that do that "hateful in-laws" cliche or trope or whatever you want to call it so I can understand why kid!you would think that was the way it always goes.

I tried to get someone to teach me the words for wishing upon a star because I seriously thought it would work and I would get what I wished for. I eventually I realized that it couldn't possibly be that simple.

That there was something that lived in our basement at night. I hated that basement. My dad's office was on the other side of it. I hated going down during the day, but night was the worst. I had nightmares about it almost every night until we moved.

When I got a little older, that there was something wrong with me, that I somehow had a boy gene or something, because I thought about sex.

When I was a kid they still ran ads for porn movies in the regular newspaper. One of them was called "Desires Within Young Girls," and I thought that meant when I got older I would be overcome with "desires" and want to have sex all the time.

I grew up in a super conservative area where the only sex ed girls got was to not tempt boys and that girls didn't want sex, just relationships. And my parents, while they weren't that way, didn't think to give me actual sex ed until my senior year of high school. So I spent a number of years thinking there was something wrong with me (but still sneaking my mother's romance books and then reading smutty fanfic because I liked it even if I didn't know why).

the only sex ed girls got when I was in school was puberty (which I'd already been through), pregnancy and a lot of scare tactics about STDs. No birth control, no idea that anybody had sex because they liked it or any reason other than BABIES BABIES BABIES, no masturbation, no concept of anybody being gay, etc.
