This is by no means a new phenomenon. One of the episodes of the old Justice League cartoon is about an evil fanboy who doesn't want superheroes to ever grow or change.

but the great and terrible internet makes it a lot easier for popular fanon and fandom trends to make their way to the ears and eyes of the sreators, whether said creators try to indulge it or attempt to discredit it
