I don't know why I keep having to say this, but in any fandom, there is guaranteed to be a marginalized population of sane fucking people.

Edward/Bella is extremely unhealthy. It's not even a relationship, because both fail to acknowledge the others' fault and thus truly accept them. It's frightening infatuation at best. And you know what?

It's good that you see these problems, and we're all very happy for you I'm sure, but plenty of people don't. My problem, and the OP's, and plenty of other people's, is that it's presented as a healthy relationship and junior high/high school age girls who are too inexperienced-- not stupid, inexperienced-- to know better will aim to emulate it.

That's not ragging on them, or on you; it's a serious problem with the original work. Not with the fandom. (With which I am still not very impressed, incidentally, if you're accurately representative of the parts of it who can write proper English.)

Thank you, yes. I know there are sane people in fandom. However, the amount of love the series gets and the fact that an extraordinary amount of fans don't see how unhealthy the relationship is bothers me. (that is "fans", not "fandom". sometimes they are the same, sometimes they aren't.)

Just because people think something is romantic doesn't mean them end up emulating it. Generations of Heathcliff fangirls have actually ended up with healthy relationships, even if that seems hard to believe considering his wife-abusing, puppy-killing tendencies.

I am perpetually astonished by the number of people who think that "well, not all people are like that" is a valid argument that things don't matter.

I'm astonished by the number of people who use "just think about the kids!" arguments to denigrate works of fiction. In a world where for the past 500 years the epitome of romantic love has been two teenagers killing themselves over it, Twilight truly doesn't matter.

I'm not going "just think about the kids!" here. I'm saying that, in discussion of this secret, I'm seeing a lot of people going "well I'm not like that, so why do you care?" And that's really shitty logic.

Speaking as the OP, I do think that teens and kids have a less developed sense of assessment than adults-- they aren't "mini-adults", they're still learning (moreso than adults) so relationships in popular media really do have an impact on what they think is "normal".

That said, it just annoys me how many fans swoon over the relationship without realizing that, HELLO, Edward is a stalker and that's creepy no matter what age you are.
