103. I think that people coming out of the closet at my (very conservative) Catholic college would have an easier time of it than people coming out as serious Catholics in a slash/BL fandom.

108. Seconded.

I second this statement with the power of a thousand suns D< -is a Catholic that enjoys certain slash/BL fandoms-

One member of my nakama is a BNF in a BL fandom despite having graduated as a theology student and believing Catholic teaching on homosexuality. She's not in it for the boys kissing, she's in it for them ripping each other's souls apart and all of the really amazing meta in her canon about the nature of forgiveness and revenge. But she refuses to get theological about things, despite the awesome meta it would make (there's a lot of garbled Japanese-style Christianity in her canon), because it would out her as Catholic and the fujoshi in her fandom would get stupid about it. And that is a shame.

Wow. That is really sad.

I've been fortunate: I know a lot of Christian geeks (my dad and uncle included), so being Christian and a fangirl didn't clash until I went online. Even now, I'm fortunate that most of the fandoms I've gotten into have had Christian members - though the Harry Potter fandom could get a little interesting! (Scripture in Deathly Hallows FTW!)

Amazing how "tolerance" never means what you think it does.

103. I don't mean to be the crusading dissenter, but I must disagree. Yeah, it sucks that religious people aren't trated fairly online and I certainly do not condone it, but in all honesty that is really the only sanctuary they have.

In the real world where the consequence are far greater, atheists have historically considered the worst of worst by most religious sects. Hell, even the tolerant religious folk tradtionally hate atheists (see: Thomas More's Utopia).

Oh god, ick. Fortunately my family follows my train of thought (they're more "don't give a shit" though), but it cost my mom her political position and got the Tate clan branded THOSE DIRTY HEATHEN ATHEISTS because my city is full of gossiping whores. I swear to god, they check my MEDICAL RECORDS----but I digress.

When I can drive down I-40 into town without seeing a giant 150-foot cross on the side of the road, I'll listen to religious fandom bitchings with my sympathy.
