Oh oh oh you're talking about anecdotal stuff, okay. I thought you were talking about, like, your religious experiences which as a nonreligious person I can safely say nonreligious people have great difficulty relating to.

Shit, if that's all you're saying and they jump all over you, they need serious chill pills.

Yeah, see, that really is the experience. No matter how offhandedly I mention the fact that yes, I am a person of faith, it always gets some kind of a reaction.

I have literally had people respond to "Oh, yeah, I've got church in the morning, so I've got to turn in a bit earlier than usual, guys," with something like "See, I don't get people who think the Bible is literally true. That's just totally messed up." It's really frustrating and undermining.

I really am sorry you've experienced stupid things like that. To be completely honest, though, I think the majority of it stems from a backlash against nonreligious people offline. I live in the middle of Tennessee, easing into the Appalachians, and being a known atheist is really a pain in the ass.

Last semester, my two roommates and I all took the same lit discussion class, and once our beliefs became common knowledge simply through being asked our opinions, we were literally stalked by a few choice people.

Of course, this is, as always, an incredibly vocal minority that ruins it for everyone. Having grown up in such a deeply religious area, I recognize that the religiously retarded people are few and far between. However, people that don't have my insight or level tolerance I think feel oppressed by American religious culture thus severely overreact to nice people like you.
