I don't think that Naruto himself will see her as a consolation prize but really Kishimoto is setting her up to be for him if he doesn't get Sakura without much more relationship depth than that. Which upsets me because Hinata deserves better! >:( Or something. Really I have no idea why I hate it so much.

I think you might be reading a little too much into this 'consolation prize' deal--for example, Naruto isn't still seriously pursuing Sakura, and hasn't been for some time. I can't really see Hinata as a consolation prize since Naruto doesn't really have anyone in mind--hell, romance is probably the furthest thing from his mind, esp. since he just found out about Jiraiya. ;_;
I think, ideally, that if/when Naruto/Hinata comes to fruition, it'll be due to an epiphany on Naruto's part. I mean, the boy's that damned thick, he's overdue for one. It won't be him getting the girl who is left, but rather finding out that the one thing he wanted more than anything in the world was already being offered freely to him by someone who has supported him all along, albeit from the shadows.
I have heard that the theme for Shippuden is supposed to be 'acceptance', so that can really go either way for Naruto/Hinata. Now, if we get a Goku/ChiChi set up without so much as a page of furthered development past the already established foundation--I swear, me and half of the Naruto/Hinata fanbase will be with you raging about how poorly the pairing was strung together--the other half will probably join up with us eventually after the vindicated gloating subsides.
Reading your responses has been helpful--though I think you're actually more frustrated with the lack of development at this point in time. Which pretty much defines where I am at the moment with this manga. Not to mention, I am so SICK of reading about the Uchiha. -_-
I want Team 8 and Team 10 to come back around, since neither, sans Shikamaru, got to do ANYTHING during their respective arcs. They all deserve better, esp. Hinata who has been flamed for simply existing.
