Can an active anorexic actually bring a baby to term? Movies about it always show them miscarrying or having no periods.

nary people w/ eating disorders like anorexia CAN sometimes get pregnant but it's v risky for mother and child.

I've seen articles about women diagnosed with anorexia who managed to give birth to apparently healthy babies - albeit babies of low birth weight.

However, to my understanding, up until the DSM-5 came out in 2013, cessation of menstruation was one of the criteria necessary to be met in order for a female to be diagnosed with anorexia in the first place. Link:

The way the DSM-4 phrases it makes it sound as though, medically speaking, a diagnoses of anorexia nervosa was dependent on the sufferer not menstruating. Which would mean all individuals with an official diagnosis of anorexia nervosa would be unable to become pregnant. However, I'm not sure if that particular criteria for diagnosis was actually upheld in practice, even before it was phased out of the DSM.

Generally someone in that state isn't able to carry a baby to term but it does very rarely happen, just like some women in concentration camps had babies (not comparing the mental illness to genocide, just the extreme physical state). The baby is likely to be low birthweight which has a lot of complications of its own, and it puts a lot of stress on the mother's heart, so it's not recommended even if someone does get pregnant.

NAYRT--huh. I wonder if it's possible for an anorexic who's already got the associated problems--low body mass, lanugo, etc--to carry a healty baby to term if they immediately start bringing their food and vitamin intake to normal, and not fuck up their own body even more than the anorexia would already?
