But a lot of them actually had, you know, plot.

Honestly IY's problem is not that it didn't have plot but that it DID and that said plot didn't work well being stretched over that span of time. It has more of a plot than say, Bleach, because it's set up as a singular quest instead of several arcs (where the mangaka can basically do what they want). It would be like if Harry Potter was spread over fourteen books instead of seven and thus began to drag. It wouldn't be that HP had no plot, it would be that it's just too long. I am a fan and I have multitudes and multitudes of issues with IY, but it is the opposite of having no plot.

And if you watched the anime it sucks anyway so... *shrug* The series had fantastic pacing for the first 2/3 of it (but the anime always had poor pacing and took out like... a huge chunk of what was good in the manga). It's afterwards that she began to horribly flounder.

Why does everyone keep comparing it to Bleach? A lot of shounen manga suffer from the fatal flaw of dragging on too long. The difference is that Bleach hasn't been going on for 12 fricking years.

The anime sucks? I'll believe that. That doesn't change the fact that the manga dragged on, though. That's my main issue with it.

Bleach is just a big one and it's the first thing that came to mind. I didn't mean much of anything with it. Could just have easily have said Naruto, One Piece, DBZ, etc.

Huh? Inu-Yasha had story arcs. It wasn't just one long chase scene after the bad guy. That would be really boring. It has an overarching plot, yeah, but so do most things. (Bleach and Harry Potter included)

(where the mangaka can basically do what they want)

I'm not even sure what you mean with this. Besides things like editorial control, why wouldn't the author be able to "do what they want"? They're the ones writing the thing.

It's still a singular quest though. It had subplots and arcs along the way, but it has a concrete goal that must be reached and a lot of threads connecting to it. All of those subplots connect right back to the main plot. Sure a long running shounen generally starts of with a goal (I want to be the next hokage, I want to be the pirate king), but those are things that define character motivation, not the story itself. Comparing it to one of Rumiko's other manga, Ranma 1/2 is essentially plotless- with one very loose plot-thread (Ranma wants to cure himself) that fuels character motivation and nothing else. IY otoh, is plot intensive. It doesn't make it better, just different. I just object to the statement that IY is plotless.

Besides things like editorial control, why wouldn't the author be able to "do what they want"? They're the ones writing the thing.

I mean that there's really not an overarching plot, so they can pretty much do what they want since there's not much really keeping then in line with something they set up early on. I don't mean that there's some upper power prohibiting them from doing it. Could she have killed Naraku and replaced him with another villain? Heck no. He has huge connections with every single main character (outside Shippou) and the only way she could have brought in a second villain is if she in turn introduced a new permanent cast member or two. Could she have ended the shikon no tama quest and started another one? Absolutely not.
