It's her attitude of, "I'm perfect, you're not allowed to criticize me." Yeah, you should write for yourself (I'm a writer too), but if you're gonna slap it on the interbutts, people are going to comment. Take it with grace or ignore it, don't have a shitfit over it in the commentbox.

And I still stand by my opinion that there's no real plot.

She's taken quite a bit of legitimate criticism with good grace by my lights, doesn't seem to spend too much time dictating to the fandom about their character theories except when they descend into extremely ugly hate speech. I don't think her opinion is so much "it's perfect" - she's noted, for instance, when fans have pointed out continuity errors and fixed them, reviews her use of language when people indicate that things were unclear or they're unsure of how something happened. That's not, again to me, the act of someone who thinks she's perfect.

I think she's just disinclined to have people tell her that her universe has to work X or Y way because of D&D, or because of classical universe physics, or whatever. Which people do on a regular basis.

I've seen her be polite to people that I've had bansetted ages ago for obviously trolling in between useful comments, because they occasionally did make useful comments. Unless you take "if you hate this story don't read it" as "I'm perfect, don't criticize me." Some people read and express nothing but hatred for the story, and honestly I don't see the sense in it either.

I stand by my opinion that there is a plot, one which moves slowly because of the first-person narration and the fact that the days take several chapters to complete. But people are allowed to like different things; I don't even think I challenged your no-plot assertion, as that's a matter of colors and tastes.

I just want to say-- and no offense meant to unleashedfreak-- that this is the most well-phrased and intelligent rebuttal I've seen on these great internets in the past...like...four months. And that makes me happy. :D

(I really need to start reading Tales of MU again. I can't even remember why I stopped.)

Re: 160, random comment

Wow. I thank you.

Lots of people don't like MU, I don't take it personal-like, but I tend to think the author's a fairly decent person - far from perfect, but decent - and it always takes me by surprise when someone's like "she's a bitch." Sarcastic at times, yes, but so is R.K. Milholland when his fans annoy him - and they don't comment directly on his site with their personal attacks. You know? She links directly to a forum that's very critical of the story and of her personally from the main page. The characterization just doesn't fit, however you feel about the story, at least based on what I've observed since I started reading pretty close to the beginning.

Please do start reading, and come check out fans_of_mu if you feel so inclined. I'm really liking what's going on in the story currently.

Yeah, I never read the forums or learned much about the author when I was reading, but from what my friend (who was and still is hugely into it) tells me, she's a cool enough person.

This could be way off base, but the whole "she's a bitch because she snarks at cruelly critical fans" attitude doesn't seem to apply to male authors/creators-- whenever I see people do it, at least in real life, it always smacks of (usually unintentional) sexism to me. Common American thinking dictates that it's okay/cool for a man to be sarcastic and cut people down (sometimes if they haven't even done anything), but not for a woman to do so. Again, maybe I'm reading too far into it...

I'll probably start reading again at some point, but honestly, the point at which I stopped was just kind of...emotionally disturbing to me. Which is, I think, the mark of a good author, but no less difficult to read.

MU has had those emotionally disturbing moments for me too, but I think overall it does well. And I do think there's often an element of sexism to the author/creator criticism thing, just judging at some of the things that have gotten thrown at her on the comments, on f_s comments before now. (I am not saying that the OC necessarily dislikes her for sexist reasons, but the disparity is definitely there in the general reaction.) Milholland is way, way, way mean to his fans in his taglines and blogs when they tell him how to run his business or write his comic, but I rarely see him characterized as a dick, and from what I hear he's a good con guest. I think female sarcasm in a "thank you for telling me how to do the job I do, not like I've never heard that before" type way much, much more frequently reads as bitchiness than it does when a male creator says the same type of thing.

You should come play with us at [livejournal.com profile] shangy_feminism sometime. :D

T'anks! We are small, which sometimes limits our discussion and I'm always trying to bring new voices into the community to share their things they find along the way, which is kind of what shangy_feminism has evolved into: a place where feminists of various stripes come and think out loud, drop off something that gave them thoughts, just - keep the discussion going.
