Re: Inspired by 7 - What types of book endings make you furious?

I have two specific (and spoilery!!!) answers:

SPOILERS

SPOILERS

SPOILERS

SPOILERS

The Giver by Lois Lowry: It’s a good way for kids to get into dystopias. BUT THE ENDING SUCKS! The main character, Joans, learns all about the creepy, culty world he’s grown up in, decides to break away from the only society he’s ever known, and…nothing! The book just stops. My teacher told me that whether he lives or dies is up to the reader to decide. That is so lazy! I just spent 150 pages invest in Jonas’ life and struggles…for you to not tell me how it ends in the last 30???

Atonement by Ian McEwan: This was one of the few books I actually red in high school. I love period pieces! Especially period pieces where the backdrop is WWII…Except the whole story is a lie told by a liar! After page, I think ~80, the whole story is just…the little girl making up a story because everyone is actually dead. There is no reunion and amends made. They just separate and die because of the little sister told a big lie that made the older sister’s parents banish her true love. So if none of it is real, why should I give a shit? What a waste of 350 pages.

Ooh, for The Giver, there are three more books in the series (Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son). You can find out what happens to Jonas in Messenger.

...I thought there were only three books in the series. I have never heard of Son. *adds to list*

(otherwise, though, I came to make this comment)

Son was pretty decent. I mainly liked it because my childhood OTP became canon and I couldn't believe it.

Hmmm. I don't remember shipping anything from those books...I'll be interested to see what that is!

Also Lois Lowry herself said that she meant it to be an optimistic ending, even before she wrote the other books.

(At the time I read it I took it for a very pessimistic ending, but I'm like that.)

Atonement is really bloody annoying. Nobody likes a smart-arse.

It's particularly annoying because the whole mess is the girl's fault. We all know everything is always the girl's fault, Mr McEwen, thank-you patriarchy.
