I'm still not okay with that character in the prequel series I headcanoned as either gay or asexual, being confirmed as the biological father to the main series' protagonist. (Don't tell me he could have been bi: I saw him just not attracted to women at all.)
And more than that, I'm really really not okay with that cold, manipulative asshole of a character being sincerely in love at all in the first place and it doesn't matter if it was with a woman or not.
By the way, the protagonist's mother deserved much better than to fall in love with him.

Does the canon say he was in love with the character's biological mother? Or is the fact that he is the character's father all that's known. Love and attraction aren't necessary components to sex.

Yes. Fast forward twenty years or so, she's been dead for ten years, he sets up to bring her back and explicitely calls her "my love" as doing so. If it was just fleeting attraction, if it was a little more ambigous I'd gladly take the whole affair as a big mistake on both parts, but nope.
(Oh how do I hope her zombie self comes back wrong, snaps at him for leaving her in the first place, chews him out, states she's totally over him now what the fuck why does he come back now it's way too late, and punches him out hard and good.)

As to the first part, if canon hadn't said anything about his sexuality yet, your headcanon was just a headcanon. They aren't doing anything wrong by going a different route.

I agree with the second part, though. There are some jerk characters that then get portrayed in a romantic relationship, and I don't buy it, and it isn't fare to whoever they are partnered with.

AYRT didn't say it's not okay for him to be straight/bi. They said they're not okay with it, which is a perfectly valid way to feel.

OP, I can empathize with you quite a bit right now. S2 of a show I love is about to air, and I'm really worried they're going to try to tell me one of the characters is straight/bi. And if they do I will just not be able to make peace with it ever.

Which fandom?

It's time to let the Anakin hate go.

Kidding. It does sort of fit, though.
