117. I hope you know that's not a good way to build self-esteem. Why don't you look at yourself in the mirror and say everything good about yourself. Like food or stuff like that, it's only something superficial that won't over a gaping hole. Seriously.

Mostly because (and bear in mind my watching is sparse) the nondetective women seem to vary between weak victim, manipulative bitch, and submissive housewife/mother refusing to accept the obvious. There aren't a lot of women who both have good intentions and have the willpower to carry them through without being victimized.

The men aren't any better. Slobbering pervs, ego-freaks, insecure losers, psychos. Unless it's a grieving parent, or a victim NONE of the side characters are meant to be admirable, that's the point. Perps do bad things, and people lie to protect themselves. Man or woman.

Also, what's the the Goren hate? I'm a huge fan, (intelligent, quirky, willing to do the right thing to help innocent people even at the cost of his own comfort) but I can see how he can be annoying (too right, anti-authoritarian, melodramatic) what is it for you? (And PLEASE don't say it's how he treats Eames. He needs Eames to live. Heh.)

PS: Do keep watching, and check out the old stuff. Goren isn't the Goren he used to be. *cry*

Well, he made need Eames to live, but he's treated her pretty badly in the past. But it doesn't make me dislike him, because the show actually acknowledges it. I can't really understand the misogynist thing, but I can get the Goren hate. He's pretty ridiculous at times - especially when he's trying to get information out of people - and can be kind of an asshole. It makes him seem more human to me, but I'll admit that he can be pretty damn annoying.

I think VDO said something to the effect that if a real detective met Goren, they'd want to smack him...which I tend to agree with.

*nods* I just mean, it's not intentional. He's smart, but he's also dumb. If he doesn't change at all after "Purgatory" I'll be annoyed. (But mainly with the stupid writers...)

I can think of a ton of reasons I like him so much and whyI'm so overprotective of Goren, but that doesn't change that he definitely rubs people the wrong way. That being said, I think the world could use a couple of him in real life, annoying or no.

I'll bet. I grew up around cops and fireman, but no detectives. I haven't the foggiest what a real one is like.

I don't think he treats Eames badly. I think it's the show that seems to relegate her to the position of giving Goren an excuse to plot exposit and generally being his handler, and since in-character she seems to be all right with that there's no reason for Goren to try and change that.

Pretty much, and add manipulative He never seems to act shocked on the few occasions where he's dead wrong, just always knowing exactly how to play people against each other...if he wasn't working on the side of good he'd be creepy. I don't think most of the confessions he forces out would even stand up in court.

Hopefully that will change now? I don't have much faith in this new season, but maybe Eames will get some more meat.

I was watching an episode today from season one and all I could think was "God, your such an ass," (about Goren) You make very good points. I guess for me it's just he *is* on the side of good, to a fault. (Your comment reminds me a little bit of Dexter from Dexter actually) In the same vein as the last line in your secret, I can't stop loving the crap out of him.

That being said I will admit if someone else played the character I might not like him as much. This was the first role I saw Vincent in and was blown away. The subtle stuff, the big stuff, the humor, and emotional stuff...He makes him exceptional, yet still painfully human.

I don't think most of the confessions he forces out would even stand up in court.

*nod* Another reason I miss Carver so much. He was the sanity in crazyland.

Oh, you'd be surprised at just how good it is at building self-esteem; there's nothing better than seeing people worse off than you. Cosplayers helped me realize that. And like I said in another comment - at least I'm not an asshole about it. I just strongly believe in the fact that it is okay to be an asshole just so long as you are an asshole on the inside (and no one knows it).

It's hip to strike out at a show, it makes you feel righteous, and smart. Me housemate and I have talked about this sort of thing at length about Doctor Who, uh why people do it, not doing it ourselves.
