I thought it just meant christian, not just anyone who isn't Jewish.

Afaik, a word usually used by Jewish people to refer to non-Jews. Often with the "dirty nonbeliever" connotation attached.

Yup. the literal meaning isn't so bad, but the implications are that of inferiority and uncleaness.
