Rated compared to other slurs? Lets say a TW for slurs is in effect.

I thought it just meant christian, not just anyone who isn't Jewish.

Afaik, a word usually used by Jewish people to refer to non-Jews. Often with the "dirty nonbeliever" connotation attached.

Yup. the literal meaning isn't so bad, but the implications are that of inferiority and uncleaness.

No to all those things, but also why? why go away? when not make this thread. you could simply not respond?

I hope it's not being impolite to say it, but I don't see a lot of good, productive, positive places for this thread to go. I don't see a lot of good places for this thread to be coming from. And it doesn't seem like there's a long history of keeping that stuff contained in a single thread.

Your absolutely fucking constant bad-faith arguments and incredibly transparent pokes for "gotcha!"s are tiring and contribute nothing to the community except annoyance.

Not that bad, really. It's a normal word in Yiddish, kind of slangy in English.

But context matters.

Here's one take, but not definitive, because you know, two Jews, three opinions:

That was one hell of a worth while link, thank you. This is rare!

Aside: Is Hispanic a slur? I legitimately had not one fucking clue. seriously I'd heard Latino/a as a term, but thought that was just a term of people from Central / south american. I had no idea it was the new term for all people of Hispanic descent. I honestly have been using Hispanic as a catch all term for people of the Spanish diaspora (I think that's the right term for it. diaspora?). I mean it sounds better than calling them a Spaniard.

Edit:

Hand on, shiksa is a bad word? Seriously? I've only ever heard it used affectionately. I've called my girlfriend my shiksa. Damn.

On Hispanic I'd not heard it's a problem? But I had heard they're two different things. Hispanic means from a Spanish speaking country and includes Spain, Latino/a means from Latin America and includes Brazil. So there's significant overlap, but they're not exact.

Re: How bad a word is Goy?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-13 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hispanic isn't a slur, it's just often inaccurate, irrelevant and unspecific, and thus not preferred. For example, someone can be from Mexico and have no Spanish blood. Or what about a Brazilian? Latino/a denotes a more specific, relevant origin. Latino/a only refers to people from the Latin American cultures, not from Spain.

(Not every word people don't prefer is a slur)

I'm sorry I linked to that page now. I don't even agree with her. And it's like I said, "Two Jews, three opinions."

It's a question of context and delivery. "Shiksa" is different coming from you than from your mother or your rabbi.

I would have said that "latino" is more West Coast & "Hispanic" is more East Coast, but apparently that's out of date now.

I worked as a "shabbas goy", i.e., a non-Jewish person who helps an Orthodox Jewish person or family do chores on their Sabbath day (roughly from sundown Friday night to Saturday night). The Sabbath is a day of rest so Orthodox folk don't do things like cook, clean, or other work, so they sometimes hire a non-Jewish (goy or goyim) to do these chores. I don't mind the term goy and am not offended by it. However, that doesn't mean I speak for all non-Jewish folk, who may be offended by those terms.

I am one (at least, culturally, my last name and ancestry are another thing) and it's never had a negative effect on me, but I can't speak for everyone.

Same. I don't know how Jewish I'm supposed to consider myself. No one in my family has observed Passover for the last two generations. I consider my religious beliefs to be closer to Christianity than Judaism. but the fact remains my nana on my mams side was Jewish, so... I don't know. Am I still one of the chosen people?

What about the High Holidays? I know Christians who'll do a Seder, but I don't remember meeting any who do Yom Kippur.

It doesn't sound like you were raised Jewish, but you're in if you want to be.
