Dark skin headcanons

Are there any characters in your fandoms that people consistently headcanon as dark-skinned or non white in some way, where there's nothing in the text to support it?

Someone here mentioned Indian Harry Potter a few days ago. I'm not in the HP fandom, but I was looking at a Harry Potter tumblr today, and at least half the fanart posted had Harry drawn with dark skin. And these pictures were made by a multitude of artists, so it wasn't a case of just one person having that headcanon. I find it kind of interesting that so many people had this headcanon.

Race bending HP characters just males me roll my eyes. All three of the main trio are white, end of.

Fingon from Tolkien fandom seems to get drawn with dark skin regularly. I think it's more than one artist doing it, too. I don't see his siblings drawn that way as much, oddly enough.

Yeah I noticed that too. I don't mind it since I like diversity in general, and want entertainment media to be inclusive.

(It's also an aesthetic thing, tbh: beige beige beige gets boring.)

I just find some of them weird. Like, I've seen a lot of people drawing Magneto black (at least I assume he is supposed to be black).

I hate it because it's such a blatant grab for brownie points. If all the people who draw that shit actually cared about diversity in media, they would be supporting and trying to bring attention to the actual existing diverse media out there, not just drawing Harry Potter with dark skin. But none of them do.

Yamaguchi from Haikyuu gets turned into an ambiguously brown person a lot. He isn't even particularly tan in the manga or anime.

There's also a lot of ambiguously brown/black versions of characters from Les Misérables and while there are definitely a few of the students who could be dark skinned, Enjolras is not one of them.

I guess what I'm most curious about, is why certain characters get it and others don't.

Like why Harry, specifically? Because he's the main character? Because he has black hair, and it wouldn't make sense to have, say, Ron be black or Indian when his red hair is regularly mentioned?

People who race swap characters and treat it like costumes and skin tones in a character creator bother me because like, you can't just do that and change nothing else. If you're a minority, your minority race and culture and family and history is part of who you are. It's impacted how people have treated you all your life. If you race swap Hermione to Indian, her experiences being Indian in the UK especially in muggle-world would be just as major to POC Hermione.

Even if you intend to include it all somehow, it's almost impossible to capture that tastefully in one flat artwork, so it ends up looking like you color swapped them, and that's all that happened.

I don't know that I'm against it, but I can't be entirely for it when so many people seem to be reducing it down to appearance in the exact same way as people who claim "I don't see race" or "race doesn't matter" and insisting they don't have to change at all and could have been Indian the whole time... it's only a matter of changing their looks to fit.

As a POC even from the liberal-est of liberal areas, I don't and can't believe that.

Money survey

I've been thinking a lot about money recently and am curious, what's the approximate breakdown of people's budget as percentage of income? For extra flavor, where do you live? E.g. Mine is: Rent and household bills 55% Savings 20% Money for stuff I pay yearly like insurance, car stuff, etc 15% Monthly payments like petrol, phone bills, etc 7% Disposable income 3% I live in the UK.

I also live in the U.K. and we have a double income. Housing and related bills are about 40%, savings 30%, transport is only about 10% because husband's job pays his parking and rail fees, communications and entertainment (mobiles, landline, internet, Sky, tv license, Cineworld Unlimited) are about 10%, food and clothing is about 5% and the last 5% is disposable income.

We have a 20 year mortgage since we were always going to spend that money for housing and now we can afford to go on holiday a couple times a year, pay road tax for my car, dine out occasionally, and still put money into savings/low risk investments.

I live with my family, save roughly 90% of my money, and live in a rustbelt suburb

Of my yearly income? About 10% goes towards "housing" and travel costs (it's high because I travel much of the year and hotels are expensive). About 5% goes toward food and bills like my cell plan, vehicles, etc. I generally end up flipping about 50-75% of my paycheck right back into my business, either into general upgrades or bonuses for employees or whatever I want to get done. Anything left over goes into savings or disposable income.

All of that depends on how much money I pulled in that year, though, since my pay varies pretty wildly.

Which should I buy

So I did some work for an attorney and got a check. I'm saving most of it, but I want to buy a couple books. I'm definitely buying the pre-ANH Leia book. But I want to buy a new fantasy thing to try. Should I go with the Belariand by Eddings or the Inheritence Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. Or I could also get the Riftwar Saga? Which of the three is the best?
