Bite me, Eff you, and other idioms

(Anonymous) 2017-10-15 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never been able to figure out why "bite me" is a valid retort. Shouldn't it be "Bite yourself"?

Same for "Fuck you." It doesn't make sense unless you're addressing someone for whom sex is an unpleasant experience.

Now, "sit and spin" I can understand, I guess.

Supposedly the origins are along the same lines as 'suck my dick' and 'eat my ass' or other sexual mouth-to-bodypart phrases.

Well, I did not know this, but it's pretty interesting:

And 'Fuck you' isn't necessarily 'sex', since 'fuck' can also mean messed up, broken, etc. So 'fuck you', in that sense, could mean 'i hope you get fucked over' or 'i hope you get fucked (possibly literally and against your will)'.

Just my opinion on the last one, though.

It's invective. It doesn't have to be logical.

This is why I'm always fine with people saying that they could care less.

Thank you! I get so tired of people "explaining" that "I could care less" isn't logical. People don't say it because they don't know the difference between could and couldn't, they say it because it's an expression.

NAYRT (obviously)

But it makes no sense! It literally means the exact opposite of what you are trying to get across. It's not a phrase like "bite me" or "fuck you"; it is an actual phrase with meaning to it. I never call anyone out on it, but I definitely take their opinions at less value because of it.

It also rolls off the tongue better imo.

IME, people who say it also always say it sarcastically. It’s gets really annoying seeing people whine about it here and it’s never brought up that it was possible sarcasm.

Even invective language follows logical patterns though.

Like how lots of different cultures have the language pattern of salad-salad ('would you like pasta salad or chicken salad or egg salad or salad-salad?') or repetition for emphasis or rhyming for emphasis, or how if a phase is said sarcastically enough it changes common use meaning (nimrod being a compliment originally)

I mean even 'I could care less' is where a mistake has been made so many times it becomes more well known than the correct version.

Oh, sure, there is some traceable cause in terms of how those words came to be used the way that they're used.

I mean they don't have to make sense in a literal, logical way.

Ah ok, I got the two confused, thanks for the clarification!

I just say bite me a lot because of MST3K.
