OP

So the only recs I did remember were Tipping The Velvet and The Charioteer. TTV was kind of suuuper emotionally heavy and almost stressful to read, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped. I did like the ending though. TC just basically wrecked my shit tho, just wrecked it. It has some of the most beautiful prose I've ever read and I love the characters so much, except Bunny, he can get fucked. I don't know who recced that one but wow. I had to just kind of sit there recovering emotionally for a good half hour after I finished it. That was a book and a half let me tell ya.

"Emotionally heavy" is a great description for Sarah Waters' novels. She's an amazing writer.

I don't remember your thread, but I can also recommend The Administration Series by Manna Francis. You should be able to find the first novel(and a couple of others) on her website for free: http://www.mannazone.org/zone/admin/index.html

DA (piggybacking request) (not recommendations) (sorry)

Lord John Grey mysteries, by Diana Gabaldon, m/m though that's not the main focus

Mary Renault's ancient Greek stuff? Last of the Wine, Persian Boy, etc. more historical genre than m/m though.

Some very good titles have been published by this small epress: http://manifoldpress.co.uk/

I'd particularly rec:

Adam Fitzroy "Make Do and Mend" – WW2 in rural Wales, won the Rainbow Award for best Gay Novel in its year

Jay Lewis Taylor "The Peacock's Eye" – actors in Elizabethan London, runner-up Rainbow Gay Historical Fiction category

“A Pride of Poppies”, anthology, modern stories of the First World War, short-listed for a Historical Novel Society award, Lambda Awards finalist

C. B. Lewis writes m/m historical fantasy stuff with time travel, although I never followed their original stuff, mostly just read their fanfiction, written as amuseoffyre (Fyre on Ao3). Their goodreads ratings look decent, though.
