I'm trying to remember a time I thought CGI was "amazing," and it comes down to the design of what it was less than the rendered reality of it.

90% of the time, CGI is invisible to the audience. Mad Max: Fury Road is a prime example. No, most of those in-cab shots were not done in a moving vehicle.

Oh please, you know that isn't what people are referring to when they complain about CGI.

Yes, but I also know that most people who complain about CGI don't seem to have a good understanding about what most CGI artists create.

So?

Lord of the Rings was the last time I thought so, particularly because it combined real props/actors/scenery so perfectly with the fantastical stuff. It really bothers me how much CGI is in most movies now, especially when they farm different scenes out to different production companies and some of them are better at it than others! (See Avengers: Age of Ultron for a prime example of the seams being visible)
