Agree on a lot of points. He's definitely Thingol, not Thranduil, which will be really awkward whenever they end up making Silmarillion and really annoys me in Tolkien fandom because they take characterization from the movies but don't label it right. I want the elf I love from the book.

I wanted to like him more in the movies because I really like Lee Pace. However, the eyebrows did not work at all with the rest of the elf-getup. I also thought some of the clothing didn't work either. But, overall, he was a better elf than any of the LOTR group.

Wasn't the Tolken estate/Tolken's son really adamant about the Silmalillion not getting made into films? I could be totally wrong, happens a lot, but I swear I read that somewhere.

Yeah, but eventually Christopher will die and the Tolkien estate will release the rights. I think it will happen within my lifetime but I'm just saying that at some point, it's going to happen and when it does, everyone will say that Thingol is just a version of Thranduil, not knowing that Thingol was the original.

I heard Christopher Tolkien was unhappy with how the LOTR trilogy turned out, and is adamant about not selling the rights to The Silmarillion.

Exactly. He was hot, and I love Lee Pace. But he is not Thranduil.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Lee Pace was seriously overacting to the point of ridiculousness.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, i love thick brows but his were so unshapely that they looked like huge caterpillars on his face. It's not good.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-24 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, he's the closest I'll get to seeing Thingol on a screen so I can't complain.

Lee Pace makes a surprisingly pretty elf. I was delighted by his presence. I haven't read The Silm yet, so I have nothing useful to contribute.

I want his entire wardrobe in this picture. Fitted to my size, of course. But damn if I wouldn't look fly with that crown. Hmmm. Halloween?

Also, I don't know much about Thranduil nor Thingol, but I will agree that he was lovely to look at, and it is very annoying when book character =/= movie character. You can always just headcanon him as Thingol, with some weak excuse about Thranduil being called away for xyz reason...

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
that's...not a headcanon that can even be possible. Thingol died several thousand years prior to Thranduil having to deal with anything dwarf-related in Mirkwood. valiant effort, anon.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
lol

let me try oooonce more (please note I have not read the Silmillarion nor have I read the Hobbit, the LotR trilogy yes, so please do not set your set your standards high...or Have any at all, lol)

Could it have been possible for Thingol to have some how been preserved in a crystal or sap of some sort, bound by magic? Or was he killed in battle?

I'll stop now. But you have encouraged me to read the Sil, I want to know who Thingol is now so thanks!

Thingol was killed by dwarves and his kingdom is currently under the ocean.

Try reading John Rateliffe's “The History of The Hobbit”! It's basically HoME for TH. He argues that the Forest Realm and Doriath are basically the same, just developed differently for different parts of the legendarium. Thranduil is Thingol, Menegroth is the underground palace, the Arkenstone is the Silmaril, the spiders are the spiders, etc, etc.

Wow, interesting! I'll definitely check it out, too. :D
