Overrated fanfics?

What fics are famous in your fandom but you think are overrated?

For me, it's Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. The characters are unlikeable, especially Harry, the deconstruction of the original books is honestly joyless, and it reads as if the author cares more about spouting his philosophy than telling a story. From what I know about the author, he's incredibly arrogant and kind of a jerk.

To this day I don't understand why MoR is so beloved and famous.

What I have heard about HPatMoR makes it sound completely daft.

I think we've more or less turned the corner on HPMOR being universally considered good?

All of them, honestly. Every single one of the top kudos'd fics in my fandom is pretty terrible imo, ranging from rambling telenovela-esque melodramatic plotless slogs to terribly characterized smutty AUs.
(ironically, one of my own fics is up there. I do actually think it's better than the others, but I'm biased)

As for HPMOR, I agree. I have no idea why so many people on my facebook are suddenly getting into that fic and praising it. I tried reading it, it's so preachy and badly characterized and pretentious. And many of the fans tend to have an attitude of being better than everybody else... also many seem to be fans of Worm. Nothing against Worm, but those fans tend to be self-aggrandizing asshats too. I saw somebody post in all seriousness that Worm has the highest quality fanfics of any fandom and the best writers. REALLY NOW.

The last time I went looking for Katekyo Hitman Reborn! fanfic on ff.net, the top fic by reviews was a time-travel, Peggy Sue type fic. Now, I *love* the whole 'go back in time and fix past mistakes' sort of thing, but this was just SO BAD.
It started with all the main character's friends having turned their backs on him because he killed someone who was, at that exact moment, actively trying to kill him. In canon, these friends included:
- A murderous sociopath who killed his (admittedly evil) family, got adopted, killed *that* family, and planned to kill a vast number more
- A violent control freak who (canonically) knew good ways to get rid of a corpse
- A guy who, by 14, was a professional hitman
- A guy described as a 'natural born killer'

I just... couldn't handle any more. I think I stopped reading part way through the second chapter.

98% of the top rated fic in Teen Wolf are awful immature OOC bullshit.

Kirk/McCoy is my OTP for Star Trek AOS, and the one fic that gets rec’d all the time, “Switch,” I just couldn’t get into.

Alone On The Water by mad_lori is one of the most kudosed fics in the Sherlock fandom, and also one of the most well known. Everybody talks about it like it's some masterpiece of sadfic, but I just find it...I don't know, excessive and lacking in subtlety, I guess. I mean, the premise is that Sherlock gets diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and does within the month. So of course it's sad; if you use a box of 'sad' flavored cake mix you're going to get a 'sad' flavored cake.

I like mad-lori's writing a lot, I just don't like that particular fic. But so many people rave about it.
