Say you become fabulously wealthy - like, a multi-billionaire - but you have to live in one single city (or urban area, or small town if you want I guess) for the rest of your life.

What city would you pick to live your extremely wealthy life in?

If I had enough multi billions, I'd build a town myself. Somewhere in middle America. Living in other people's cities is for plebs.

Arlington, VA. Close enough to DC and NYC to visit with less traffic and tourists.

ETA: I'd choose NYC if I have to be stuck in one city for the rest of my life. You can do and find anything in NYC.

I should have been clearer - what I had in mind was that you can't leave the city limits (or the limits of the urban area or whatever). Maybe some bizarre genie cursed you or something, I don't know. I mean, obviously you don't have to go along with that, it's just what I was thinking in my head.

All the more reason to build one yourself, so you can build it out as big as you want.

Unless you meant an existing city? In the real world? In present day?

the San Francisco bay area, where I already live. I love it there, it's just better to live there if you have a lot of money than if you don't.

London. I don't even like London all that much, but it's inexhaustible.

Hmm. Three way tie between London, San Francisco. and where I currently live. I guess I'd make my final decision when my billions showed up.

Either Seattle or Vancouver.

Re: OK

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Vancouver... Even if I had enough money to live in New York forever I'd miss it too much.

I love traveling, so being fabulously wealthy but trapped in a single city sounds like hell, no matter how awesome that city is. But I guess if I had to pick, it'd Paris or London.

I need a balance of city and countryside to keep me sane and I can't think of anywhere that exists that meets those needs. So... build my own I guess?

Re: OK

San Francisco was my knee-jerk choice, but then I remembered how much I enjoy not dying in an earthquake. Now I don't know. Some place that gets neither earthquakes nor hurricanes, where wildfires are unlikely, and where sea level rise would not be an issue. Snow is okay. Maybe I'll join the person above who suggested Madison.

Re: OK

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'd stay in Seattle, but I'd use a good chunk of my wealth to get the 80 fucktrillion homeless people off the streets because that's really one of the only major issues here.

Go back to New York (city but also greater metro area), I suppose. I loved it there but it got too expensive & I got tired of trying to break into the American middle class. As a one-percenter, I'd be golden.

I want to say Queenstown, but I would prefer to reserve judgement until I'd actually seen the place, so I'd live just outside my old hometown, Lismore. It's a moderate rural centre in north NSW with farmland and smaller towns around it. I wouldn''t live in town, but have a place somewhere in the shire area, with a bit of land. Maybe I'd open a cat shelter. I'd be inclined to build a hobbit smial for a house too.

London, England.

Such a pretty place to live.
