125. Lucid dreams are amazing. The sleep paralysis that often follows, however, isn't. :(

::EDIT:: On the subject of "learning" to have lucid dream, the only way I've ever managed to do it is by a) realising that I'm dreaming (which is obviously really quite tricky to do) and then b) concentrating very, very hard. Especially if I want to change the environment or control the people/objects around me. It's frustrating because there's a fine line between changing what's happening in your dream, and forcing yourself awake by accident, and then that's what seems to result in sleep paralysis. For me, anyway. I'm guessing it differs from person to person.

137. According to the Wiki (reliable source, I know) that scene was added at the end because test audiences didn't like the abrupt finish. The director didn't want it. So maybe that's why it kind of sucks.

I haven't found achieving/controlling a lucid dream to be difficult (not saying I'm a special snowflake or anything). I think a lot of it is the mindset you have about it - your expectations about how difficult it's supposed to be. When I was able to convince myself that it's easy, that everything I dreamt was in my mind, lucid dreams came daily and were more or less fully controlled.

You might be interested in a technique called WILD (http://www.dreamviews.com/community/showthread.php?t=40684) (Wake-Initiated Lucid Dream), which involves, as you might have guessed, going directly from being awake into a lucid dream. I do this every now and then, so I can attest to its legitimacy. That whole forum is great, actually.

Wow, that's pretty cool, thanks for the link :) That's pretty cool that you can have the dreams daily. I managed to have one last night but as I said above, it took a lot of focus. Perhaps if I relaxed about it a little more I wouldn't find it so challenging XD thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I think a lot of people get it in their mind that lucid dreaming is this complicated, difficult thing that you have to really work at for a long long time and not to be used lightly and blah. This is totally true.

That is, if you believe it's true. Your dream life will go along with your expectations. =)

[identity profile] lapifors.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Just curious now, what kind of things do you lucid dream about? I've never really discussed it with anyone before...

[identity profile] strinky.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything and everything, really. My first lucid dream, I was a Ravenclaw student at Hogwarts. I asked a turkey how it felt about Thanksgiving and changed my gender (these were "lucid challenges" over at DreamViews), fought a magical battle with Dumbledore, and made out with one of my guyfriends. Flying was common at first, various romantic encounters with people I know and with, say, celebrities, swimming and playing sports. I often explore pretty landscapes. I like to experiment with what can be done, like challenging 'rules' such as "you can't say your name in a dream," or "getting too excited will wake you up," or "you can't read sensible text." I've found all of these to be untrue.

How about you?

[identity profile] lapifors.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of mine end up being romantic encounters with one particular person, because while during my waking hours I'm quite imaginative, usually once I'm in the dream I can't think of anything to do! But a very recent one I had was about the Wall-E robot that's coming out in Pixar's next film. I created one and got him to help me soup up a PS3 and Wii into a motion sensitive gaming platform that let me play Portal with the WiiMote... in my dream I decided was a technology genius, haha. So, nothing extremely exciting but enough to keep me pleasantly amused. After reading that forum you linked me I'm planning to have a try at doing some more adventurous things.

It's really interesting that you've been able to challenge those rules. I've had dreams where I'm surrounded by clocks that all have very bizarre times written on them, or books with weird writing that changes all the time, and I never thought to try and make them "sensible" again.

Ah, if it's coming up with things to do that's the trouble, then I eagerly point you to this thread. (http://www.dreamviews.com/community/showthread.php?t=24102&highlight=list) It helps to think (while awake) about what you want to do during your next lucid dream. I've found that when I do this, my subconscious can be really helpful and will provide the correct environment/people right off.

[identity profile] lapifors.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I might give this a practice tonight then... Thanks so much for all your helpful advice and links. I have learned a lot :D!

[identity profile] abrandnewboom.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't work towards lucid dreams or anything, but yes, sleep paralysis sucks. :(

[identity profile] lapifors.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
fhsdhgfsdg I know right? Worst is when someone walks in to the room and asks if you're awake and you ARE but you can't tell them and you just want them to shake you or something so you can snap out of it but then they just don't. That, and if your bed covers have somehow wound up over your face and you have to breath really slowly so you don't suffocate =/ it's really nightmareish.

[identity profile] kazou-kiriyama.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god I know right ): I used to have it like, every night a while ago. ;x; Horrible.
