I think that in the anime community being an "otaku" can be considered a good thing, but weaboo would definitely be the bad meaning. Weaboo also seems slightly more insulting (to me), and I agree it has the "wannabe" aspect to it.

See, what I don't like is when people start associating "weeaboo" with anyone who happens to be interested in the Japanese culture, but got their start in anime or manga. People who realized they liked the language because of anime or somesuch. Or people who just like anime in general. Or Americans who happen to be interested in the Japanese culture at all.
There are things I do that could be considered "weeaboo"--when one of my family members get home, I always always say "tadaima" because that's something the whole family's done since I was a baby, and it stuck. I don't think tradition-related things like that should be enough to categorize someone as a weeaboo, but everything people say these days seems to denote that it is. (To me, that seems like the same as calling someone the equivalent of a Mexican "weeaboo" because even though they're white they always have a pinata at their birthday parties. :|)

I also agree that "weeaboo" shouldn't be used for situations you described. I always thought of it as when a person thinks Japanese culture is above all others, and thus they start trying to emulate Japanese things all the time. A general interest in Japan or having family traditions wouldn't be considered weeabooish in my opinion. (Though I'm certain some people will say otherwise just because they can/want to troll.)
