Someone stole my comment already, but yes - AMEN! I never understood why there was so much "non-con" in all of the fandom. It's such a disgusting kink. I've never been raped, but I don't need to be to know how un-glorifiable it is. And what's irritating is that a lot of fics then create romantic relationships between the rapist and the one raped. I can't help but go, "WTF??" What's really creepy is the age of the writers too.

Yeah, that sort of relationship (victim growing affections for the rapist or vice versa) is called a "stockholm syndrome" which really does exist in psychiatric terms. It can happen in any traumatic situation because it's a coping mechanism, but it is NOTHING like it's portrayed in fic.

I've heard of that. But I asked my psychology professor about it (wondering why we never covered it in class) and according to her it hasn't been documented well enough to really be considered official... I'm just quoting her, I'm not an expert on this and actually I took the class several years ago, so whatever.

However, on a personal note, I can understand where the feelings might come from. I was molested when I was a child and when I told my parents (hard thing to do!), I actually felt bad for the guy when my father yelled at him and when he lost his job (he worked for my grandparents). In the end, I felt like I'd done something wrong for turning him in instead of the other way around. But apparently such feelings happen often enough in molestation/rape cases.

Long, pointless story just to say I agree with you in the application of that thought process in fic. I can stand rape fics, I just can't stand when romantic relationships develop between the two - even if it's a case of the rapee sympathizing with the rapist. Just not my cup of tea.
