148.) Sorry. But I do not agree. Entertainment is just entertainment. If you look for that stuff in everything and whine about that stuff in everything you watch or read--it gets absurd.

Really? Because it's not like people watch celebrities because they want to have that lifestyle.

Entertainment/fiction/fandom is a means of projecting, so all this "TEEHEE REAL LIFE =/= FANDOM" bullshit is just that--bullshit!

That said, when you make racist/sexist comments, or write all sorts of fucked up fic, you can't honestly say there's not a part of you that doesn't agree, or doesn't like it.

Really? Then why is fandom up in arms when people say people who write incest fic approve of incest in real life?

Entertainment does not exist in a vaccuum. It reflects real life, and is reflected in real life.

Did you even read the secret? The OP did not imply that fiction trumped RL. The OP said s/he has the ability to care about more than one thing.

We're not allowed to enjoy things anymore. We have to stick to fiction that only says things acafen approve of. Because we're children who need to be preached to 100% of the time.

I agree. (My reply to the poster above you applies to you as well.)

But what appears in pop culture is often representative of society and its issues at large. Criticizing a TV show or movie or whatever its -isms is not just criticizing a TV show, it's criticizing the underlying -ism in entertainment and society.

Caring about these issues AND real life issues is not mutually exclusive.

Plus, I mean, if entertainment is the opiate of the masses (and in my mind, it absolutely is), then if there is bigotry or subversion of a certain kind of people lauded in these types of entertainment, then it is subconsciously saying that that sort of thinking is acceptable, and it is not. Yes, idealized sexual fantasies perhaps can exist outside of their realistic counterpart (rape and incest, I suppose), but that's not what people are arguing over. What people arguing over, and I don't think people getting tetchy get this, is that the internalized sexism, racism, homophobia/heterophobia, et al. in fandom really shows a deeper problem in society. Cultural anthropology ftw.
