Just thought it was interesting that folx are saying that "non-con" is not exactly the same as "rape".

I hope that what y'all mean is that some non-con fic stops short of penetration, and not that "it's not realllly rape because they're dating / they're lovers / other excuse".

Reassure me on this point, peeps.

The way I always heard it, 'rape' was anything nonconsensual and 'non-con' was rape where the victim was made to get off. :/

If that's the case, then "non-con" is certainly rape. Rapists will try to use the excuse "s/he enjoyed it", and may even force their victims to come; but lubrication and ejaculation are involuntary responses. If you're in agony and/or terrified you're going to die, you are not enjoying yourself. I don't mean no-one should ever fantasise about this - I just mean that we should all be aware of the difference between the fantasy and the reality.

and just to prove that no one can ever agree on anything, I 'always heard' rape was anything that was forced as a matter of power struggle and had NOTHING to do with sex and noncon was riding the edge between want to - don't want to and both parties end up enjoying it ANYWAY whether they wanted to or not.

Non-con fic is usually any sexual contact that's nonconsensual vs rape being, well, penetration. Goes along with the Clintonian definition of "sex".

The fics where the "victim" really wants it and it's a rape fantasy, rather than being an actual rape fic, are usually labelled "dubious consent". Dub-con are the ones that I like, personally, and write on occasion.

I will say that from my personal perspective, I use non-consent because fictional rape is not rape. Nothing, not even a fictional account, is like rape and I feel that by calling it rape, I'm implying that something fictional can be compared to a real life tragedy. Which, for me, it just can't. But, the whole "it's tru wuv" crap? No. Just no. Rape isn't about love or even sex. It's about power and forcing someone to do something demeaning against their will. Of course, that's precisely why so many people have non-consent fantasies: abdication of personal responsibility.

But that's another thing entirely and not pertinent to this particular comment box.

*tips hat* That's a really interesting point. The word "rape" is obviously loaded with emotional power - I've been discussing it online for so long that it's kind of lost that for me.

I always figured people didn't call it "rape" because it's fictional and therefore generally a ravishment fantasy (that is, it's not consensual within the text, but metatextually it's a sexual fantasy-- and fantasies can be ended at any time.)

In fic terms, they are different. If I see a fic labeled "non-con" or "dub-con", I expect the characters (or the reader) to get off on the situation in some way. If I say a fic labeled "rape", I expect the fic to be deal with an actual rape and its repercussions.
