...I don't see what those awful details have to do with the fantasy, and I also think it's out of place to suggest that people who write nc don't know about them, since most people who write nc are women, and one out of three women...? Seriously, what's needed is better labelling (if you think it's unpleasant to be a rape survivor and run across fantasy rape fic, try being a rape survivor looking for fantasy rape fic and finding the realistic kind), not silly disclaimers like "everyone knows rape is bad in RL, right?" because everyone does, and those who don't will hardly be convinced by that, and the real problem is that there are too many men out there who don't actually get what rape is, like for instance they confuse "allowing you to pay for my dinner" with "agreeing to let you fuck me".

Well, no. Very many women and men tut-tut that "rape is bad", but actually believe that it does little harm, or believe that it's "not really rape" if it happens on a date, if the victim is a sex worker, etc etc. These myths about rape do enormous damage - your dinner-buying rapist is a good example. If a fan isn't aware of the legal and medical facts about rape, then sharing their fantasies risks supporting rape myths. Some sort of disclaimer ("this is not a realistic portrayal of rape, here's a hotline number/link to a factual Website, now on with the show") could help writers etc avoid that.

I'm sorry, I don't know too many women who believe 'it's not really rape' if it happens on a date. Most women who haven't had that experience know someone who has. That's typically an attitude that men have.

I also don't know too many people who think that anything in fanfic is realistic at all. Seriously, do you?

I'm sort of fascinated by this comment. Putting aside for a moment the issue of rapefic:

Good writing is always realistic, not necessarily in the sense that "this could really happen", but in the sense that the characters' experiences and motives and reactions and so on ring true to us. But why is fanfic in particular considered unrealistic? Because it's mostly speculative fiction? Because of its amateur, derivative status? Because it's not very good? (It's especially intriguing to me since, the last time you and I debated here, you described yourself, as a fanfic writer, as an "artist".)
