101. I hate people who like this. It's not fandom's fault, it's just that your sister might have some problems detaching from it. If it that serious, get some affected and influential family members and talk to her about it if you're not doing about it. I can bitch about certain addiction some of my close family members and friend had but I never blame the source.

108. That's nice you're not in slash, I guess. And not slash fans are there only for the guys either. If someone push anything, just ignore them.

123. I know the feeling. I'm 24 and the fandoms are dominated by 16-18 years olds. I don't like to converse with underage fans too much either because it creeps me out in that regard.

124. You're right, no one deserves rape, but I'm pretty sure that people at least understand the ramifications of how emotionally and physically damaging it is. However, rape is a very popular fantasy for women (to the point there's services that stimulates rape for women who want it). I agree with calling it non-con rather than rape is not to cheapen rape, non-con fics play more on powerplay that people get a kick on. I agree I wish that original BL can chill with the non-con (personally, I don't see it much in my fandom, as much as dubcon anyway) because overused, annoying trope is annoying and overused.

125. This can apply for all fandoms, seriously. I'm tired of "YOU'RE NOT PLAYING THE WAY I WANT EVERYBODY TO PLAY!" Honestly, I don't care how people like to play around, I mean I wish people know that you can step and create whatever you want. Honestly.

136. If you seriously think so, don't. Also, the anime sucks anyway.

137. Wellll, I understand if they no longer feel safe in that house....

148. But it's fiction, that's why they tell you to care about actual people. And most of the time, those accusation of racism and sexism aren't really there.

Agreed.

148. But that assumes someone doesn't care about real people. Not to mention that the criticisms aren't really, at the core, in defense in the character, and therefore are not about the people themselves, "real" or not; it's about whatever prejudice or other problem it is based on, which is a lot larger than books or movies or music or whatever.

And most of the time, those accusation of racism and sexism aren't really there.

O rly.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ya rly. I'm not saying it doesn't exist (hence the use of "most"), and that doesn't say you don't care about real people as much as put that same effort towards something benefical towards real people. And I do agree that most accusations of racism and sexism are too broad. Like the Law and Order: SVU secret that said that it was sexist to women in reality women are often the victim of rape, spousal abuse and the such so it's not surprising for a show that tried to be as realistic as it can.

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I never said that most accusations are too broad, so I don't see where you're agreeing with that.

I'd have to see the exact phrasing of that secret. Women often are the victims of crimes, and disproportionately when it comes to sex crimes, so no, something that reflects that isn't automatically sexist. But if the OP had a problem with how it was portrayed, that might be another issue.

A couple possibly exaggerated LJ secrets =/= "most" criticism not being valid.

148 OP

... Did you even READ my secret? My caring is NOT a zero-sum game. I can both care about real people and analyse media depictions of racism, sexism and other prejudices.

Just because it's fiction doesn't mean the underlying prejudices do not have a very real impact on real people. Just because I'm analysing the effect doesn't mean I don't do OTHER THINGS.

However, rape is a very popular fantasy for women (to the point there's services that stimulates rape for women who want it).

yeah, because our patriarchal society has more or less brainwashed women to believe that it's their place to be raped, hence making them wonder what it's like if they've never gone through it.

Why does so much feminist rhetoric boil down to "all women are victims and none of them are capable of making their own decisions"? God, that pisses me off. Because, last time I checked, having a vulva and perverted sexual fantasies at the very same time was my decision, and none of anyone else's business. Isn't the point of feminism to assert female dignity and equality, not perpetual victimhood? Or is it just the old, "if you disagree with me, you are obviously incapable of rational thought," for which I have zero patience?

For the record, I am a victim of rape, a fan of rape fiction (though not of anything that glorifies the rape; I'm more interested in the victim's road to recovery), and have acted out rape fantasies with my husband (reenacting something that nearly destroyed me in an environment that I can control or call off any time I choose, slowly transforming it into something else).

thank you for that.
