But I do like analysing things for their political impact. I can do that as well as doing more "concrete" things. I wish people would stop telling me to NOT analyse because clearly my analysing means I'm not doing anything else to advance my (many) causes.

The problem is that it never, ever stays on the level of fannish analysis when it's politics. Never. It always acquires moral force, and suddenly you've got a horde of screaming lunatics telling you that you're a victim of internalised misogyny and a sad excuse for a feminist because you don't think the issue of Dean Winchester's use of the word "bitch" to describe a demon from the seventh circle of hell who just happens to be wearing a woman like you'd wear your jeans actually HAS political impact on the larger world.

It's one thing to lose a friend over whether or not you think X should be boinking Y because very few sane and reasonable people will break off a friendship over something like that, but you start throwing words like "sexist", "racist" and "privileged" around over a goddamn TV show and suddenly people who've been friendly for years aren't talking to each other and there are people who actually think this makes sense.

As far as I'm concerned, the internalised misogyny in fandom, if such a beast exists, doesn't manifest itself in people who prefer only to have dicks in their porn, or people who don't like love interests. It manifests in the way that women will tear other women that they basically agree with on most things fucking apart because they don't agree with each other about whether or not a given piece of media is "sexist" or "racist".

And don't even fucking get me started on the people who treat other people like they're stupid for defining "racist" as "racial discrimination" rather than "entrenched privilege combined with power". I'm sorry, in high school and in most work places you are told that "racist" means "racial discrimination" and that it's "racist" to say bad things about any race, even white people. If someone hasn't read the same books or theories that you have and uses commonly accepted definitions of words rather than progressive specialist definitions, they're not stupid, they're just not someone who spends all their time thinking about politics.

I have watched my fandom eat itself over the last year because of this bullshit. I don't think it does ANYTHING good to stop actual sexual or racial discrimination. It just makes fans hate each other. And when the ultimate goal is to get characters off TV who don't behave in a way that a certain political group thinks they should, I can't even agree with the motive behind it.

It's not that I mind people analysing things for political content. It's that I disagree vehemently that one-hour genre TV shows have significant political impact, and DO NOT WANT my entertainment to be used by any political group as prescriptive social engineering. And I don't want to be told that I should want that, and that not wanting it makes me a non-feminist. Especially not when it's coming from people who were not even born when I was out doing the work in the early 80s in Kentucky and West Virginia.

Then ignore the social analyses? Just because someone is talking about it doesn't mean it has to acquire a moral force. Unless you believe there's inherent morality in the argument, morality doesn't come into the argument.

Just because you don't want your entertainment used in discussion as an argument (and I'd disagree that analyses of prejudice are political) doesn't mean that other people can or shouldn't use them as such. Remove yourself from the discussion in question. That said, the point was merely that just because I'm analysing media doesn't mean I'm not soing other, more "concrete" things as well. This has nothing to do with anyone being told what tehy should want, except insofar as no one should be told to "shut up about a TV show and go do more important things."

Sorry, I automatically do not read comments by Supernatural fans. Not because it's sexist or anything.

But because it's really just a bad show all around.

That was a joke. Stop taking yourself so seriously.
