*gives cookies*

I can agree with this on so many levels, but... It's also easy to understand how hard and daunting it might seem to new fans of the characters. With the cartoons and movies the characters are there and that's the canon. Neat with a wee bow attached.

With the comics... there is just SO MUCH to read to understand some things in canon. Good god, the Summers family alone can make a person cry with the complications.

So many deaths.... Oh hell, screw the Summers family-- What about Cable's backstory? That's enough to drive people over the edge!

It takes time to get caught up... and luckily, there's such good explinations going on in comics these days to keep new readers interested. They've moved past the "(X) SEE ISSUE #54 PAGE 12 FRAME 2" crap and are actually looking back on pasts in better ways to keep it connected and fluid.

Of course, if you want to read EVERYTHING, you'll have some trouble, but there are certainly points where readers can hop right in. The only hard part is finding that spot.

*nodnod*

But then we get the writers that are just fanboys on a power trip...

Ugh.

Sometimes I wonder if Marvel is trying to drive away the old fans.

If you've read Young X-Men or seen the new costume designs for Post-Whedon Astonishing, I think you'll have your answer.

This generation, however, has had some BRILLIANT writers that have really made great leaps in characters, stories and developement.

Re: #140

[identity profile] zeepuppetsdance.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Some brilliant, but then we get the Duanes and the Ways who haven't read anything past 1995 in canon on the characters they're writing.

Oh, Young X-Men. The Young Justice of Marvel. I'mma just wait for when they decide to kill the kids in order to make a new 'Epic Event to Change the Face of Marvel Until They Retcon It' more edgy.

...I might be a bitter comic book fan sometimes. *facepalm*

Re: #140

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
They best not kill Rockslide or Dust. As long as those two survive, I'm good. The others: let 'em go. .___.

God, those writers are horrible. I just hate how they try to bring up resolved themes and take away the message of moving on with life. I swear the only reason Jean came back so much was because they wanted "Marvel Girl" back on the roster and Apocalypse keeps reappearing just because he's the "big bad." Ugh... They need to move on and do cool stuff.... like with Danger.

Re: Rockslide and Dust

Motto. Fucking motto. So much more potential there than rehashing Gambit and Rogue's big epic lurve that can never be for the hundredth time.

I adored C&DP, it made me want to buy comics again after the longest time downloading them.

I just want decent characterization at this point, is that too much to ask for? It's just sad when I look at comics these days and equate them with bad fanfic.

Re: #140

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wish Gambit would just die; his only point in comics is to be Rogue's badboy crush and make 12 year olds squeel. Stupid useless fanservice character.

I'm so happy Deadpool's getting his own Solo again. I'll really miss C&DP, though.

As for the fanfic, thing, it really just depends on what you read. I try to avoid Uncanny X-Men and regular X-Men as much as possible (for the sake that they're both pretty bad/repeatative/boring), but X-Factor, Cable and X-Force are really good ongoing X-Titles; while Astonishing X-Men and New X-Men are titles I ALWAYS reread just because of the great characterization.

Exiles is getting the shit kicked out of it, though. I swear Claremont can't let go of certain characters and writing them as boring, blank slates.

I'd be happy too if it wasn't written by someone who thinks they're the second coming of Garth Ennis. I love me some Deadpool. I've read just about every appearance he's had in Marvel.

Re: Cable solo...

Bishop ripped someone's heart out. He fucking ripped a heart out.

When did people start doing this? Is this a new trend in comics? Should I worry that Tony Stark is next?

Re: #140

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Naw, Tony Stark's too busy putting his friends in jail for not joining his club and every other douchey thing imaginable. I imagine Bishop's kind of lost it after his future never gets "better" and now he's just looking for shit to blame.

I'm willing to give Deadpool a chance... and hopefully it won't just rely on him shooting things for three issues straight. His dialogue and wit are what make him unique.

Re: #140

[identity profile] zeepuppetsdance.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Heart ripping!

I mean, sure, it was the Time Mullet, but no one deserves that. Well, maybe Stark.

Okay, that was a lie. Damn Robert Downey Jr made me like Stark as a character again.

Way makes me wanna throw things at his head with how he's been writing Deadpool so far. ESPECIALLY on the high note he was ended on in C&DP.

I... might be insanely possessive of Deadpool as a character. I blame RP so darn much for it.

Re: #140

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
I hated Stark pre-movie, aswell. RDJ made him interesting and quirky.

I didn't mind the way C&DP ended, but I think it just should have continued-- the ending didn't feel like an ending, but I still enjoyed it.

Wade's action figure is one of my favourites in my collection. :)

Re: #140

[identity profile] zeepuppetsdance.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
He made the character less of a cardboard, mustache twirling evil douche.

It's just... I'm a sucker for character development. Making them heroes or villains, whatever, I love it all. But unless Way can explain why he took a character-- who for all extensive purposes strives to be better --is back in the 'Yay! STABBING PEOPLE FOR NO REASON R FUN!' from way back in his solo run where he kept a damn blind woman in a box filled with sharp bits...

I will personally retcon everything he writes (OMG I CAN SO SPELL) Because it's just bad fanfic to me.

Eeee! Lucky! I am far too cheap to shell out 100 bucks at a con for one of my own.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I bought an unpackaged Wade off ebay for like $25. I feel so lucky. D:

Re: #140

[identity profile] zeepuppetsdance.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
SO UNFAIR! I swear, if Marvel was smart, they'd market the Deadpool plushie from that one cover of C&DP.

Make a fortune.

Oh my Phoenix, I agree. So bad. I want one too.
