Have fun, I don't think the movies are all that bad.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE the movies, hate the books.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Twilight is still one of my guiltiest of pleasures. The first book is still the only one I actually reread.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You're reading the entire series? Like, including the final two books?

You poor bastard.

The last two are the worst : /

I am so grateful that the first few chapters of Breaking Dawn leaked early because I was able to cancel my preorder I had on it.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you enjoy them, OP. Started with New Moon, devoured and re-read Eclipse (that book was practically my 15 year old self's bible) numerous times (Bella could keep Edward, all I wanted was Jacob). The final book was a slap in my face and I came away with more love for some minor characters than for the MCs.

I think if I would have started with Twilight, I would not have read the rest.

I can't tell if this is an origina secret, or just my own opinion from general comments reformulated slightly and turned into a secret. Lol.

But anyway, I feel you anon. I wouldn't say I actually decried the series in my teens. I wasn't really outwardly critical of it. But I definite judged it privately. Then I read the first two books in my mid twenties and enjoyed the hell out of them. Not that I think they'd good; they're not. But I don't really care. They're fun, yummy junk food novels.

I also really like the first Twilight movie. Catherine Hardwicke's directing in my jam. The "my own personal brand of heroin" scene makes me cringe from beginning to end and I wish they'd cut almost all of it, but besides that, I genuinely like the movie.

Sadly, I absolutely loathed Eclipse (the book), so my fun kind of ended with the first two. But maybe you'll like it better than I did.

I think I saw one of the movies and didn't mind it, but otherwise the books aren't my cup of tea. Enjoy them if you do though, no harm in it.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry about your taste, but you do you.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, because I'm sure you don't like anything that's objectively less than great.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, this series. I was so hyped for the concept and then she fucking GOOGLES "vampire" and decides THAT makes him the man for her! No awkward teen romance, no sense of danger or lust, just... Google. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, people can be such judgey pricks about Twilight, and I don't get it. If you don't like Twilight, chances are you like some other trashy book. And if you don't like any trashy books, chances are there's a trashy movie, tv series, or game you love. (Don't even get me started on fanfic.) And if you really, truly do not have a single trashy bit of fiction you enjoy...well, one, I'm not sure I believe you, and two, that doesn't really sound like much fun.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, yes, I really disliked Twilight but I love Forgotten Realms novels, so it's not because of the quality issue!

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
They're judgy because Twilight is rather terrible as a series. Sure, the universe and backstory are great, but the plot and the characters leave something to be desired.

I'm sure I like some terrible series myself, but I don't pretend they're anything but, nor do I acted shocked when I discover that there are people in the world with sticks up their butts.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
None of this negates what I was saying. At all.

They're judgy because Twilight is rather terrible as a series.

And that's fine. Judging Twilight is fine. It's judging people for enjoying it that I think is dickish.

I'm sure I like some terrible series myself, but I don't pretend they're anything but

That's fine. But if someone else thinks a piece of fiction is better than you think it is, so what? Now they deserve to be sneered at, and have it heavily implied that they are stupid and infantile (which is what a lot of Twilight fans have to deal with)? Tastes differ.

Look, I don't think the Twilight series is good. OP isn't claiming it's good, nor are any of the other people in this thread who are saying they liked some or all of it. But if someone does want to come in here and argue that it is good, so what? Obviously, for them, it is good.

nor do I acted shocked when I discover that there are people in the world with sticks up their butts.

Oh, that wasn't shock. That was contempt for judgey dicks.

I don't hate it because it's trashy, I hate it for the sexism. Honestly, I think a lot of people would be more forgiving if it were intentionally trashy, but it takes itself so extremely seriously that it's hard to overlook the negatives.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it for the sexism.

I can understand that to a degree. Though there are honestly so many other pieces of popular fiction that are so. much. worse in that regard, including pieces of teen fiction. The sheer level of hatred heaped on Twilight is extremely disproportionate.

That said, my initial comment wasn't actually about people hating on Twilight. It's the prerogative of the individual to like or hate a work of fiction. My comment was about people being judgmental jerks towards anyone and everyone who enjoys Twilight.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
my bff loves the books and we watched the movies together. she had just as much fun ripping into the movies with me despite unironically loving the series, so it holds a dear place in my heart and im looking at it much fonder now that all the performative hate has simmered down

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoy your reading and don't let the naysayers win!

(Anonymous) 2017-10-22 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight is the second worst thing to happen to humanity.

*I used to think it was the worst thing and then Trump came along*
