If a character is canonically gay, I think writing a fic where they turn out to be bi is...not a great idea? It's especially not a great idea if the reason they're bi in your fic is because you ship them with a character of the opposite sex and want to write that pairing.

look, I'm not saying I personally think you should get jumped on for writing that. Personally, I would probably find it annoying and insensitive but I'd leave you alone about it and I'd hope other people did the same. However, I'm willing to bet there would be people who did jump on you about it.

If you want to write the canonically gay character as bi for some reason that's not related to shipping, then...in my eyes, that's less tacky and insensitive, and in an ideal world it would be a completely fine and non-inflammatory thing to do. But this is not a perfect world, and as things are, it's still probably not a great idea.
