Fanfic question...is this offensive?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Is it considered horribly homophobic or offensive if there's a fic where a character who thought they were gay realized they were actually bi?

I mean... it depends on how it's written, I suppose? If the character is all, "Oh thank God I'm not gay." I would definitely raise an eyebrow or three...

Honestly, depends on the fandom. Some fandoms would be cool about it. Others will crucify you and tell you that turning a gay character bi is literally killing gay people.

This.

Depends on the context and framing. In general if a characters being gay is an important part of canon people probably won't be fond of it, I would say

This. Some characters, few people would care. But if you're talking about a character whose backstory is that they had to leave home because their family tried to brainwash them into being straight... you'll probably at least get some raised eyebrows.

There's nothing that isn't horribly homophobic or offensive to someone. Does it make sense? Yes? Then go for it.

Tbh "blah blah EVERYTHING is homophobic these days!" is just a way to shut down discussion and as a straight dude statements like that are non-productive and useless

No, I'm not trying to shut down shit. the opposite actually, I'm trying to unshut down op from their fic potential.

But seriously, if it's not homphobic, it's racist, or transphobic, or antiwoman, o islamophobic or abelist.

Fucking hell, I saw someone recently catch shit for drawing McCree with both arms because that's abelist.

Have your "discussion" all you want - do it in spite of the fact that someone somewhere will still use your discussion to shame and bully people, because that's an unavoidable truth, and is ofcourse no reason not to have your discussions - but if you're question is "Will someone take a moral stance against what I'm about to do" or "Will someone try to shit me down and claim they're just fighting the good fight while doing it" the answer will always be "YES" no matter what the topic. Someone will try to use accusations of homophobia or one of the other things mentioned above to shut people up. My answer to that will always be "Fuck them, do it anyway".

Is the character gay in canon? If so, you might get some people kicking off about it. If he's straight in canon or his sexuality isn't mentioned then you'll be fine.

you'll be fine

Oh, you sweet naive little butterfly. Don't you know erasing gay head canons is violence? It's as bad as forcing kids into "Pray away the gay" camps.

If a character is canonically gay, I think writing a fic where they turn out to be bi is...not a great idea? It's especially not a great idea if the reason they're bi in your fic is because you ship them with a character of the opposite sex and want to write that pairing.

look, I'm not saying I personally think you should get jumped on for writing that. Personally, I would probably find it annoying and insensitive but I'd leave you alone about it and I'd hope other people did the same. However, I'm willing to bet there would be people who did jump on you about it.

If you want to write the canonically gay character as bi for some reason that's not related to shipping, then...in my eyes, that's less tacky and insensitive, and in an ideal world it would be a completely fine and non-inflammatory thing to do. But this is not a perfect world, and as things are, it's still probably not a great idea.

I don't think so, just because there are people I know in real life who thought they were gay but turned out to be bi. It happens.
