Cheap but hilarious.

I think it works for me just because Jon Hamm is really, really, really good at playing characters like that

I'll willingly read soulmate fics, but I find the whole concept of soulmates kind of depressing because what if your soulmate dies? What if something happens and you don't meet or you are kept apart? What if your soulmate gets involved with someone else and then doesn't want to dump them for you? I prefer to a world where there are, theoretically, a lot of potential great partners out there rather than just one perfect one, and there's no such thing as missing your one chance because you never had only one chance.

Honestly, I felt similarly when BBC Sherlock "Briti-fied" the canonically American Irene Adler (to say nothing of all the other harm they did to her character).

Especially since the few American characters in BBC Sherlock were portrayed extremely negatively. And book!canon Irene was awesome and badass, and honestly Brit-ifying her (when they surely could have had a British actress due an American accent, like Dormer's Irene in Elementary) just seems like Moftiss intentionally holding this cool thing out of their American fans hands.

To be honest, the general character assassination job done on Irene Adler was so egregious in Sherlock that making her a Brit seemed pretty trivial by comparison.

nayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the making-her-British thing didn't even register, next to Moffat's more egregious characterization sins.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I was far less bothered by her being British than how she got so obsessed with Sherlock, when the ACD Irene was like "Phfft!"

Have you considered that it's Jonny Hamm that's representative of the asshole type?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, considering how many Pointlessly British Villains we've seen from Hollywood, I figure one Pointlessly American Villain more or less can't hurt.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
This is a fair point.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Okay I have no clue who this is, but the more I hear about the Good Omens adaptation the less excited I get.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
He played the anti-hero lead character of Mad Men.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hamm is actually wicked good at impersonations and I see no reason why they wouldn't keep the character British, Americans are perfectly capable of affecting English accents too y'know?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they're not. They're really quite shit at it to be perfectly honest.

Jon Hamm has played a British character before. Look him up in A Young Doctor's Notebook.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
He was good in Black Mirror even though his character wasn't British. :)

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh.
If I can survive all the cringeworthy German Nazi villains (if we make ti clear they're Nazis, we don't have to explain why they're evil weeeee!), you will survive this one.

I NOW HAVE A REASON TO SEE GOOD OMENS!

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm intrigued!
