I'll willingly read soulmate fics, but I find the whole concept of soulmates kind of depressing because what if your soulmate dies? What if something happens and you don't meet or you are kept apart? What if your soulmate gets involved with someone else and then doesn't want to dump them for you? I prefer to a world where there are, theoretically, a lot of potential great partners out there rather than just one perfect one, and there's no such thing as missing your one chance because you never had only one chance.

But I don't think any of those things are alone speaking unique to soulmate AUs? It's just as possible to be lonely or to have someone you love die. Having a soulmate doesn't really make any of those things worse to me.

I talked elsewhere once about how I love "soulmates gone wrong" fics and got told off because what I liked wasn't REAL soulmates fic!

once read a quote that went along the lines of:

"Oh, I believe in soulmates. Its just mine died long before I was even born."

Saddest and yet most unsettling thing and sometimes I wonder if its true.

I read this really depressing Soulmate AU where one partner has the first words their soulmate ever speaks to them on their body, while the other soulmate has the last words their soulmate ever speaks to them on their body, but it didn't appear till after death or something like that. And the point of the story was the one didn't know the other was the soulmate until after they died because soulmate respected that the other was already married. It still haunts me basically. Even something as theoretically fluffy as soulmate AUs are pretty brutal. So yes, bring on the high school coffee ninjas.
