I don't think your description is really inaccurate

I just think it rules

Just because someone is your soulmate doesn't mean you will mesh together 100% of the time.

Isn't that what a soulmate means?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I get the idea that its more like an arranged marriage… arranged by DESTINY!

1. I like the picture for this secret.

2. I too would gladly read a coffee high school ninja AU just 'cause that sounds awesome :D.

I too would gladly read a coffee high school ninja AU just 'cause that sounds awesome :D.

I think the more accurate name for that AU is "early 2000s webcomic AU"

Even ninjas can't make me want to read a high school AU, but I'd gladly read ninja baristas AUs.

Word. Actually, can I make mine a coffee high-school ninja soulmates AU? I mean, if you're gonna build the banana split, you may as well add the cherry.

why do u hate conflict nonny

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'll willingly read soulmate fics, but I find the whole concept of soulmates kind of depressing because what if your soulmate dies? What if something happens and you don't meet or you are kept apart? What if your soulmate gets involved with someone else and then doesn't want to dump them for you? I prefer to a world where there are, theoretically, a lot of potential great partners out there rather than just one perfect one, and there's no such thing as missing your one chance because you never had only one chance.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
But I don't think any of those things are alone speaking unique to soulmate AUs? It's just as possible to be lonely or to have someone you love die. Having a soulmate doesn't really make any of those things worse to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I talked elsewhere once about how I love "soulmates gone wrong" fics and got told off because what I liked wasn't REAL soulmates fic!

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
once read a quote that went along the lines of:

"Oh, I believe in soulmates. Its just mine died long before I was even born."

Saddest and yet most unsettling thing and sometimes I wonder if its true.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
I read this really depressing Soulmate AU where one partner has the first words their soulmate ever speaks to them on their body, while the other soulmate has the last words their soulmate ever speaks to them on their body, but it didn't appear till after death or something like that. And the point of the story was the one didn't know the other was the soulmate until after they died because soulmate respected that the other was already married. It still haunts me basically. Even something as theoretically fluffy as soulmate AUs are pretty brutal. So yes, bring on the high school coffee ninjas.

I don't like the trope because there are people I don't believe are anyone's soulmate. Some people are so destructive to everyone around them that they couldn't be soulmates to themselves, let alone other people.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the trope, either but not because I don't believe in soul mates. I think it's used a crutch for lazy writing. Why are they together? It's not because they have life goals that mesh, they make each other laugh, they have similar values, they support each other when they fail, they can stand each other's annoying habits, you know all that stuff that matters in real life, no. It's because destiny says so.

And in fics like OP said, mostly they just flounce and bitch and have stupid as fuck misunderstandings until they turn and look at each other and say "I guess destiny was right, after all. You are my one true love forever and forever."

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
The concept of soulmates has been ruined for me by RL. I've seen way too many of my friends put up with crappy treatment from a guy "because he's my soulmate."

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. So many miserable people out there. Soulmates are just another unrealistic fairy tale concept that keeps people chained in misery.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
We have very different taste in fanfic, OP. Give me ALL the-

- Miscommunications and misunderstandings

- Angst

- Soulmate AUs

- Coffee high school ninja AUs

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I love miscommunications and misunderstandings and angst. I just dislike it specifically in soulmate AUs. If the point of soulmate AUs is an unrealistic fluffy perfect match, it just seems excessively extraneous to throw in all those roadblocks for a payoff you know you're gonna get. I guess I like my angst with more uncertainty and gutpunchy feels. Soul mate AUS just don't have what I'm looking for.

Also, each iteration of them gets stupider than the last. "Soulmates have matching tattoos they're magically born with!" "You don't see color till you meet your soulmate!" "Your soulmate's wounds appear on your body!" "You can send each other messages through your skin!" "If you don't make it to the bathroom in time, your soulmate also spontaneously shits themself!"

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I just find some soulmate AUs extremely creepy. "Your soulmate's wounds appear on your body" -- yeah, living my life in fear that at any point my flesh might tear apart and my bones shatter because someone I don't know and don't give a shit about yet just got ran over by a car is such a romantic concept.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's funny :). And yeah, Soul mate AUs can be super fucked up if you take a step back to think about them.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I love romantic soulmate AUs, but I hate the obligatory misunderstandings so very much. You know they're your soulmate, you were meant to be together etc., why all the angsting over the stupidest things possible? ~Oh no, they couldn't possibly love me! WTF the whole point is that they will!
