Cockroaches

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo I'm from a place that doesn't have cockroaches (a cold place). I moved to the east coast and just saw my very first cockroach outside of a zoo... in my apartment. This is a nightmare-ish scenario that I am not emotionally prepared for. I think I am a pretty clean person (take my trash out regularly and keep it in a sealed bin, never leave dirty dishes out, put food away in cupboards, regularly wash/bleach kitchen). What did I do to deserve this? I seriously am anxious just sitting in my apartment right now. I know it can't hurt me but I'm so stressed I want to cry hysterically.

zoos have cockroaches?

actual helpful thing: if you only have big ones in your house then they're probably breeding somewhere else. nextdoor, where you keep your bins. basement.
nuke them at the source.

My local zoo in my hometown had a few in an aquarium. Literally the only place I had ever seen them!

I mean, to me, these cockroaches are the most enormous bugs I've ever seen in my life. I don't know if they are big for cockroaches. Now I've seen two... I told my landlord, just hoping he makes them magically disappear.

The giant burrowing or hissing ones? They're cool. I was imagining regular old cockroaches though. Haha.

They like to get in behind fridges and cabinets, so maybe do a deep kitchen and bathroom clean if you haven't?
Don't use the sticky paper traps if you have pets. Unless you have lots of roaches, I wouldn't use them at all as most of them are designed to lure roaches and you don't want more showing up.

I live near a restaurant and the roaches love the bins so I'm always going to get the odd one or two. It's gross, but it happens. You can be as clean as you want, but unless your whole block is as vigilant, they're always going to be around.
That probably wasn't very reassuring.
Sorry. Bugs are just a part of living in warm places.

Rented an apartment. Unfortunately, once roaches get into the building, they go everywhere, regardless of whether or not your personal apartment is clean.

Report it to your super, get some roach traps, and pray that they'll get an exterminator and that it will take.

If it's smaller, you may end up finding more. If it's a palmetto bug (sometimes called water bugs in certain regions... and yes, they can get up to 2 inches or longer in size), there's a good chance it came from the outside and may not be a sign of an infestation. Still, regardless of what you have, I'd call your landlord/maintenance to come spray, for peace of mind. You can also invest in some roach traps if necessary.

Also: cover your drains when not in use, if at all possible.

Roaches can make you sick.
You need to find out if they are German or American cockroaches so you can look up the best way to get rid of them.. German ones are small. I delt with an infestation of German cockroaches at the last house I rented. It was hell trying to get rid of them and they never actually left for good.

The cockroaches completely destroyed most of my furniture and books.

Iirc putting some red pepper around will keep them away.

Also this is a good article on how to keep them away: https://www.slayallpest.com/roaches/15-best-ways-to-get-rid-of-roaches/
