I just finished reading Koe no Katachi (which was really good), and someone recommended I read Molester Man after it because it wasn't even better. I'm like half way through series and I'm kind of at a loss as to why the series is so hyped up. It's nowhere near the same quality as Koe no Katachi and I really don't get why it's so popular.

I don't get why any anime is popular. It's for kids and nerds, and most of it is shit (or hentai).

Is the Koe no Katachi manga better than the movie? Because the movie felt kind of weird and disjointed to me, and holy shit look at all those unhealthy relationships... I was really hyped for it, but I didn't really like what they did with it in the end.

Short answer: yes. The manga gives more backstory and depth to all of the characters and has a different ending. I love the manga and I did enjoy the movie, but I was also mentally filling in the blanks at certain points.

Either way, I really appreciated the effort they put into the sign language, and telling this sort of story in the first place.

But Koe no Katachi was so meh and amateurish and all the characters so underdeveloped, and not only the charactets, MC and deaf girl's relationship too. And don't even get me started on the movie arc.

Sure. And there's definitely a feedback loop between the material realities of anime production (where an enormous amount of anime seems to be made and targeted specifically towards teenage nerds and/or hardcore otaku), and the realities of anime fandom where anime fans preferentially choose to watch and talk about enormously stupid and cliched shit and so that's what gets surfaced to me.

But at the same time, my experience is that, even with things that I hear about from people that I know to be smart, and that are supposed to be, you know, legitimately good, those things are still chock-full of unbelievable bullshit that insults my intelligence. It feels like, more than with most other mediums or genres, those things are treated as being par for the course with anime.

Are there any BL or GL anime that came out in 2017? I feel like I haven't kept up at all.
