I feel like it's an excellent show in a lot of ways, but I can't care about it much, because I don't like any of the characters, and I constantly want Walt to get caught and sent to prison (or just die). Plus I find him pathetic rather than cool. (Are we honestly supposed to find him cool? I can never tell for sure.)

Ultimately, you aren't supposed to find him cool, but I do think there's kind of a double-layer thing where like....the show wants to ~trick~ you into thinking he's cool with Proud Male Anti-Hero Bullshit and then as it the show continuously reveals what a selfish, soulless, egotistical pointless fuck he is, you realize that he was never cool and you've swallowed this cultural bullshit blah blah blah

it's genuinely excellent storytelling, but it's a deeply miserable story, and anyone who's a little too far to one side or the other will genuinely root for walt waaaaaaay too long, or will never be convinced by his self-serving justifications at all

I watched the whole damn thing, mostly in marathonning, and I love some of the side characters, and the pacing and structure and irony and background music and shit are all stunning, but when it was over I honestly just sobbed my eyes out for like twenty minutes because it made me so fucking miserable to realize that Walt was just going to die and there was no hell that would punish him enough for his horribleness

I think your description of the show is spot on, and captures what makes the show intelligent and interesting. But I also think you've articulated what it is that put me off about the show from the beginning. Which is actually a twofold issue.

The first problem is that, as you say, I was never convinced by Walt's self-serving justifications. I mean they held water for maybe the first couple of episodes, but after that I was pretty much over it.

But I think what ended up turning me off the show far more was how common it was for people to talk about the character like, oh, now that he's killing people, dealing meth by the kilo, and everyone's intimidated by him, he's cool as shit. I don't think it was the show's fault that a lot of people responded to the character that way, but every time I saw/heard people talking about the show that way it just made me feel annoyed, and I came across it so much I started feeling annoyed by Breaking Bad in general.

It's really not the show's fault, it's the Francois Truffaut thing about war films

What Francois Truffaut thing?

I don't think we were supposed to find Walt particularly cool. He gets made an ass of too often. The way he acted around Sky after she figured his shit out was seriously cringey. And before that, he was sort of an awkward nerdy guy.
