Things you can't bring yourself to watch/read.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the movies/books/shows you kind of want to watch/read, but you can't bring yourself to do it - maybe because you think it will be so sad that it destroys you emotionally, or maybe because you think it will scare you too much, or any other reasons you've got.

Pan's Labyrinth~ I've heard so much about this movie and I'd probably love it but I've been struggling with (clinically diagnosed) depression for a while and I'm not sure I'd make it out the other side of the movie. So it's on the list of 'one day, but probably not'.

This is exactly why I haven't watched that movie. I can watch depressing movies occasionally, but fantasy is an escape for me. I don't want to mix the two.

Of course everyone's depression is different, but I was more surprised at the graphicness of things rather than a sense of despair.

Anime. Some of them look interesting, but I don't really deal well with subtitles. And I don't know where to look for good dubs. And I wouldn't even know where to begin with anime and to find the stuff I'd actually like.

Re: Things you can't bring yourself to watch/read.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Dubs are done by the same three companies are servicable for the most part. Best bet is to torrent, check hulu/netflix, get a funimation subscription, and/or buy the anime outright.

Me ish. I've tried so many over the years, including legendary and iconic ones, and have only completed four, and I only liked two of those.

I'm not anime hater anon above but I hate the big eye little mouth no nose look. It sets off a MASSIVE uncanny valley reaction in me.

I used to like it more as a teen but as I got older it gradually lost its appeal. The only anime I watched in the last decade was One Punch Man because I found it amusing but that's it.

I love the Game of Thrones show but I just cannot force myself to read the books. I've tried both books, ebooks, and audiobooks. Fantasy novels are just not my thing.

I also can't bring myself to watch Making a Murderer even though my sister has been asking me to.

I love fantasy novels and I gave up less than halfway through the second book. I can only be told so many times that the Stark colours are grey and white.

Fantasy novels are my top thing, but I don't much like the books. The first is decent, but the rest are meh. I gave up after the third one.

Black Mirror is filled with people I absolutely adore but NHF "technology is going to warp your minds, bring out the worst of humanity, and probably kill you all."

The episode “San Junipero” is an exception to the series’ general bleakness, if that has anyone you like in it. (And because the Internet, apologies if the rec has been foisted on you...)

I have a similar problem with it. It's a *good* show, I want to like it, but the unending march of bleak worst-case scenarios really gets me down.
Part of me even feels like there's something almost lazy about it, because I think pushing ideas to the maximum dystopic side is not actually the most challenging type of sci-fi storytelling.

Movies about twins. Particularly if the twins are girls. Rarely feels like it’s done right and I’m tired of seeing “one is the smart/quiet one and the other is the sporty/loud one AND THEY DONT HAVE ANYTHING IN COMMON AT ALL HAHAHA!”

It’s frustrating enough trying to find sister relationships that aren’t pure rivalry. I don’t want to test my blood pressure trying to find stuff about twins that actually sounds as if the writers have any kind of experience.

I kind of want to watch Antichrist, just to see if it would disturb me as much as it disturbs so many other people. I halfways think I'd just be like "Meh, whatever" because non-supernatural horror doesn't generally scare me. But all the same, I can't actually bring myself to watch it after a couple of my friends have stressed how disturbing and fucked up it was.

Martyrs is another one, for similar reasons.

I was just remembering that Antichrist existed yesterday, and got thinking about how it sounds like a film I'd love to see if it also wasn't so infamously violent.

Grave of the Fireflies. It upset even a relatively stoic person I knew so I think it would make me a sad nervous wreck. I still want to watch it... someday.

I watched it, like, once? Twice? That was more than enough..,

It’s like Requiem for a Dream. Something you can only watch once. God it was heartbreaking. And disturbing. And just in general upsetting.

1984.

I've read about it. I love the Eurythmics album inspired by it. But nope. It's an enduring childhood fear, I think.
