Completely agree, OP. I’m reminded of this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aJX4ytfqw6k

Overall, I think it's both the reasons you gave.

SJWs behave like this also.

As well, it's difficult to take tone into account for many people on the internet, and often leads to people assuming the worst. The internet can become a very polarizing place, where the simplest and most mild opinion is attacked and dissected. Obviously it's mostly trolls, but it does kind of create a mindset of "attack or be attacked," or "prepare for the hate."

Maybe it's volume.

One person expressing dislike is one thing, but if it's a bunch of different people (some blunter than others), it can start to feel like hate.

Or maybe it's hyperbole.

Only if someone's being unreasonable about it or has some sort of persecution complex. People saying, "I don't really like this" isn't hate. It simply isn't. It doesn't matter if it's only one person saying it or a thousand.

ayrt

I didn't say it was, only that it can feel like it. And I don't think you need to have some sort of persecution complex to feel that because it's rarely a thousand people saying "I don't really like this," it's one saying "I don't like this," one saying "How can you like this?," one saying "I think it's bad," one saying, "Who watches/reads this stuff?", etc. And none of those cross the line into hate, I don't think, but it can add up, especially if you say you like something and what you get back is a lot of people saying they don't. I do think it's unreasonable if it's just people out in the wide world voicing their dislike and it's not in anyway directed.

Whining is always equally as annoying as whatever is being whined about. Sometimes moreso.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have to agree, but it kind of depends where the criticism is posted. If it's on Tumblr and in the tags, it's kind of a dick move to be crapping all over something when the tags are moreso meant for more positive things. Like, I don't care if people post their critical opinions on their Tumblr, but just don't post it in the tags? But I agree that people who start crying 'hate' over a differing opinion are getting a little too oversensitive.

I disagree that tags need to be for positive things, sometimes I'm just looking for people's opinions, good or bad. I use general tags to find both.

I do think it's nice to give a warning for anyone who may not want to read it though.

Same.

Also, even when I liked a thing overall, I might have criticism of a specific aspect of it. I don't see why I should separate out the different parts of my reaction so that I don't piss people off by "tagging my hate."

We're all oppressed.

I TOTALLY HATE YOU FOR WRITING THIS SECRET, OP

I've seen this from time to time. Sometimes people will identify negative comments about their ship as hate.

I remember criticizing a canon pairing in a fandom I was in and commenting that just because it's canon doesn't mean it can't have valid problems and I got someone furious with me. They accused and referred to me as an antishipper (as well as "pig" and other lovely things) even though I specifically specified that I had no problem with the pairing in concept but in execution it was done terribly.

*shrug*
