Maybe it's volume.

One person expressing dislike is one thing, but if it's a bunch of different people (some blunter than others), it can start to feel like hate.

Or maybe it's hyperbole.

Only if someone's being unreasonable about it or has some sort of persecution complex. People saying, "I don't really like this" isn't hate. It simply isn't. It doesn't matter if it's only one person saying it or a thousand.

ayrt

I didn't say it was, only that it can feel like it. And I don't think you need to have some sort of persecution complex to feel that because it's rarely a thousand people saying "I don't really like this," it's one saying "I don't like this," one saying "How can you like this?," one saying "I think it's bad," one saying, "Who watches/reads this stuff?", etc. And none of those cross the line into hate, I don't think, but it can add up, especially if you say you like something and what you get back is a lot of people saying they don't. I do think it's unreasonable if it's just people out in the wide world voicing their dislike and it's not in anyway directed.
