That can be helpful if there's a lot of fic already in existence and you don't want to trust search filters alone, but I find that rec lists can be pretty hit-and-miss, too, and people tend to rec a lot of the same fic that gets a lot of hits or kudos anyway. Lists are probably more helpful for gen, or fics that weren't tagged properly, or "hidden gems." I don't always agree with the people making the recommendations, either, that what they've recommended is all that great. I do tend to take a look at what people rec for my fandoms, but I have more success just browsing through a tag, and choosing what to read based on the summary or the first couple paragraphs. I will gladly just scroll on/backbutton out if something doesn't make the cut.
