But it is still useful for people who'd rather read quality fic and avoid the stuff that isn't to their taste. Sure, you could sort by kudos or reviews on AO3, but rec threads are better.

+1

Rec lists are really useful if you're looking for something more specific than just the most popular fics in fandom. In my fandoms, the fics with the most kudos and reviews are rarely what I'd consider the cream of the crop, and are almost never the pairing and genre I'd want to read anyways.

That only applies to massive juggernaut fandoms. For people in small or mid-size fandoms there is way less fic to sift through.

DA

I love rec lists, that said, I will agree that for smaller fandom (and in my own case rare pairs or less popular ships) there does tend to be not only less to sift through, but higher quality. This is, of course, my own experience. I'm sure it varies from fandom to fandom.

That can be helpful if there's a lot of fic already in existence and you don't want to trust search filters alone, but I find that rec lists can be pretty hit-and-miss, too, and people tend to rec a lot of the same fic that gets a lot of hits or kudos anyway. Lists are probably more helpful for gen, or fics that weren't tagged properly, or "hidden gems." I don't always agree with the people making the recommendations, either, that what they've recommended is all that great. I do tend to take a look at what people rec for my fandoms, but I have more success just browsing through a tag, and choosing what to read based on the summary or the first couple paragraphs. I will gladly just scroll on/backbutton out if something doesn't make the cut.
