You and me both, honestly.

Then again, I tried to make one and was like "Well LOOK, I don't have photoshop or anything. These are just free to use images."

When they look good, I love them a lot. Thankfully, my fandom has a good ratio of good to meh ones. I've seen a lot of ones in other fandoms I don't particularly like, though.

Question: Did you make this collage for the secret, because I want to know if the ugly, hard to read text is on purpose or not

Yes, this pupper collage was made just for this secret from a screenshot of google images tinted a lovely sepia. All font and color choices were super artistic, I swear!

I like them in book fandom (as long as it's not aggressive fancasting), because in that case I mostly see a quote from the character and several images attempting to capture their essence, not so much their appearance.

But maybe I've just had good experiences with my particular book fandoms.

The better I get to know women, the more I appreciate cats.

I would have used my favorite dog quote by Groucho Marx, but it's a funny one and this one had to be all "deep and meaningful". ;)

Adding a random lyric to a picture, then adding an ugly filter does not deepen the understanding of that character

I feel like it's not about forging a deeper understanding for most people. People just like to apply poetic words they find beautiful to characters/ships they love. It's a pretty common human impulse, I think. People do it all the time with real people we're in love with: listen to a song and think of them, read a poem and think of them, a line in a book and we're reminded of them.

Adding text to a fannish image just gives us another way to connect with characters we have feelings about - first in a general way (visually), while also provoking in us a specific way of thinking about and feeling about the characters (through whatever idea the text is linking to them).

It can be badly done, but it can also be done beautifully.
